Nassfeld Ski Guide: Carinthia's Biggest Ski Area
Nassfeld is Carinthia's largest ski area, sitting on the Austrian-Italian border above Hermagor with 110 km of pistes, 30 lifts and terrain from 600 to 2,000 metres. As of September 2026, the ranked list below sets it against the four Carinthian areas travellers actually compare it with: Bad Kleinkirchheim, Katschberg, Gerlitzen Alpe and the Moelltal glacier. Piste size, snowmaking and access drive the order.
What exactly is Nassfeld and where is it?
Nassfeld is a ski area and settlement in the Hermagor district of Carinthia, in Austria's far south. It lies below the Nassfeld Pass, the road crossing into Italy, which is why the area carries three names: Nassfeld in German, Mokrine in Slovene and Passo di Pramollo in Italian. Lake Pressegg, used for swimming in summer and skating in winter, is close by.
The terrain runs from a 600 metre valley base to a 2,000 metre high point, so the lift network climbs about 1,400 vertical metres. The Millennium-Express gondola carries skiers from the valley to 1,919 metres in under 15 minutes. Villach is the nearest larger city for rail and motorway connections, and the Italian region of Friuli sits on the other side of the ridge.
How big is the Nassfeld ski area?
The area offers 110 km of marked pistes served by 30 lifts. The mix is 5 gondolas, 5 six-seat chairlifts, 4 four-seat chairlifts and 16 surface lifts, which means roughly half the network is still drag lifts feeding local slopes and beginner zones.
The longest single descent is the Carnia run at 7.6 km, one of the longest continuous pistes in Carinthia. Two terrain parks, including one halfpipe, cover freestyle riders. For scale inside the same state: Bad Kleinkirchheim has 103 km on 24 lifts, Katschberg 80 km on 17 lifts, and Gerlitzen Alpe 52.9 km of pistes plus 12 km of marked ski routes on 21 lifts. Nassfeld is therefore the biggest single ski area in Carinthia by both piste length and lift count.
When does the season run and how snow-sure is it?
Nassfeld operates through the classic Alpine winter, with the upper mountain at 2,000 metres holding conditions far better than the 600 metre valley floor. More than 220 snow guns cover the network, which is the main reason the area can open pisted descents to the valley in a weak snow year.
Neighbouring areas show the spread in Carinthia. Bad Kleinkirchheim, based at 1,087 metres, started its 2025/26 winter in early December 2025. Gerlitzen Alpe states reliable conditions from December to April on its 1,000 to 1,911 metre slopes. If you need snow outside those windows, the Moelltal glacier ran its 2025/26 season from 10 October 2025 to 31 May 2026 on terrain between 2,108 and 3,122 metres, roughly two hours by car from Nassfeld.
How do you plan a first Nassfeld ski trip?
Fix the dates around the tariff calendar
Carinthian resorts price by season window rather than one flat rate. Bad Kleinkirchheim, for example, published 2025/26 high season as 25 December 2025 to 6 January 2026 and 25 January to 14 March 2026, with low season on 7 to 24 January 2026 and 15 to 28 March 2026, and pre and late season from 5 to 24 December 2025 and 29 March to 6 April 2026. Nassfeld uses the same three-tier logic. Shifting a week from high to low season is usually the single biggest saving on a Carinthian ski trip.
Check the current pass tariff before booking beds
Nassfeld publishes day, half-day and multi-day rates on its own ski pass pages, and some tickets are sold as a combination valid at Weissbriach and Koetschach-Mauthen. Third-party price lists exist (OnTheSnow last refreshed its Nassfeld and Bad Kleinkirchheim tables on 25 September 2025), but treat the resort page as the authority because online rates move within a season.
Pick your side of the mountain
The ski area straddles the pass to Italy, so you can base yourself on the Carinthian valley side near Hermagor or reach the lifts from the Italian side at Passo di Pramollo. The valley gondola solves the altitude problem: it climbs to 1,919 metres in under 15 minutes, so a 600 metre base village does not mean skiing on thin valley snow.
Build in a second area
A Carinthian trip works well as two bases. Nassfeld gives the 110 km network, then a day at Bad Kleinkirchheim adds 103 km plus thermal spas, or the Moelltal glacier adds 17.4 km of guaranteed glacier snow with a top station at 3,122 metres. Both are day trips by car from the Gailtal.
Who is Nassfeld right for, and who should look elsewhere?
The profile suits skiers who want volume without Tyrolean prices: 110 km of piste, 30 lifts and a 7.6 km descent give a week of variety, and the 16 surface lifts mean cheap, quiet practice terrain for families. Sun hours on the southern side of the Alps are the other draw for spring weeks.
Look elsewhere in three cases. If you want high-altitude certainty in October or May, the Moelltal glacier (2,108 to 3,122 metres, open 10 October 2025 to 31 May 2026 last winter) is the only Carinthian answer. If you want a spa-plus-ski week, Bad Kleinkirchheim pairs 103 km of pistes with thermal baths. If you are driving from Salzburg or Vienna, Katschberg sits directly on the A10 Tauern motorway between 1,066 and 2,220 metres and saves two hours of transfer.
What do people get wrong about Nassfeld?
Three assumptions cause trouble. First, the 600 metre base elevation reads as low snow risk, but the skiable core sits between about 1,400 and 2,000 metres and 220 snow guns protect the return runs. Second, Nassfeld is not one village: the lifts serve a pass area, with accommodation spread across Gailtal villages and the Italian side, so check which lift you can actually walk to.
Third, size comparisons get muddled with multi-area passes. Nassfeld's 110 km is one connected area, unlike marketing numbers that add several separate ski areas together. Judge it against Bad Kleinkirchheim's 103 km or Katschberg's 80 km, not against pass networks that count hundreds of kilometres across different valleys.
Which options rank highest?
Nassfeld
The state's largest single area: 110 km of piste, 30 lifts and 600 to 2,000 metres of vertical. The Carnia run measures 7.6 km, the Millennium-Express gondola reaches 1,919 metres in under 15 minutes, and more than 220 snow guns cover the network. Sixteen surface lifts keep beginner terrain cheap and uncrowded. The border position above Hermagor means a longer transfer from Salzburg than the motorway resorts.

Second in size with 103 km of pistes on 24 lifts, spread over the Kaiserburg and Brunnach sectors between 1,087 and 2,055 metres. The 2025/26 winter opened in early December 2025. The higher base helps early-season cover, and the village's thermal baths give a genuine rest-day option that Nassfeld cannot match. Lift count per piste kilometre is lower, so peak-week queues need planning.
Best for: Ski plus thermal spa week

80 km of piste and 35 runs on 17 lifts, straddling the Carinthia and Salzburg border between 1,066 and 2,220 metres. The A10 Tauern motorway exit is at the pass, which makes it the quickest Carinthian option from Salzburg or Vienna. Katschi's Kinderwelt handles young children, and floodlit skiing runs on the Koenigswiese on Thursdays during the winter holiday weeks.

Small but unmatched on snow: 17.4 km of piste and 9 lifts between 2,108 and 3,122 metres. The 2025/26 season ran from 10 October 2025 to 31 May 2026, with lifts turning 08:00 to 16:30 and the last ascent at 16:00. Access is via the Glacier Express underground funicular, an eight-minute ride. Treat it as a training or shoulder-season day, not a week-long piste holiday.

A single-summit area on the 1,911 metre Gerlitzen northeast of Villach, with 52.9 km of piste plus 12 km of marked ski routes, 34 runs and 21 lifts from 1,000 metres up. Lifts converge at the summit from several valley stations, and the operator states reliable conditions from December to April. Half the piste length of Nassfeld, but the closest big option to Villach and the Ossiacher See hotels.
