Best Ski Areas In and Around Mayrhofen

As of September 2026, a Mayrhofen base gives you five genuinely distinct ski areas. The home area (Mountopolis) counts 142 km of pistes and 61 lifts between 630 m and 2,448 m, split over Penken and Ahorn. Penken ranks first for terrain and park, the Hintertux Glacier second for year-round snow up to 3,250 m, then Ahorn, Zillertal Arena (150 km) and Hochzillertal-Hochfuegen.

Best Ski Areas In and Around Mayrhofen, ranked

1.

Penken

4.9 / 5 out of 87 Google Maps reviews

Penken is the working core of the Mayrhofen ski area and the reason most skiers book the village. It rises to 2,065 m, is reached directly from Mayrhofen by the 3S Penkenbahn (plus the Horbergbahn and Moeslbahn from neighbouring valleys) and holds the Harakiri run with its 78% maximum gradient. PenkenPark splits into five zones, from a pro line to a KidsPark. Published 2026/27 operating window: 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027.

Best for: Advanced skiers and freestylers

2.

Hintertux Glacier

The Hintertux Glacier is the snow insurance for any Mayrhofen trip. Skiing runs 365 days a year between 1,500 m and 3,250 m on 64 km of piste (17.2 km blue, 35.1 km red, 11.7 km black), with roughly 20 lifts and a stated uplift capacity of 94,000 people per hour. The Schwarze Pfanne descent measures 12 km. It sits up the Tux valley rather than above Mayrhofen, so it costs a bus or car transfer.

Best for: Year-round and early-season snow

3.

Ahorn

4.3 / 5 out of 7 Google Maps reviews

Ahorn is Mayrhofen's second mountain and the one to pick with children or a nervous first-timer. The Ahornbahn lifts you to a broad plateau of blue and red slopes with a FamilyPark, the FunRide and a 140 m2 indoor play area. Ski School Mayrhofen 3000 teaches from age 4 here. Advanced skiers still get the ValleyRun Ahorn: 5.5 km with 1,400 m of vertical. Lifts are scheduled 12 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, with an Early Bird start at 7.30 a.m.

It counts 150.1 km of piste, 3 km of ski routes and 52 lifts between 580 m and 2,500 m, linking Zell am Ziller, Gerlos, Koenigsleiten and Hochkrimml across the Tyrol-Salzburg border, with about 85,000 people per hour of uplift. Season 2026/27 runs 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027.

What is the Mayrhofen ski area, and how is it laid out?

Mayrhofen's home ski area is branded Mountopolis and operated by Mayrhofner Bergbahnen. The Tyrol tourist board lists 142 km of pistes (44 km easy, 66 km medium, 32 km difficult) plus 8.5 km of marked ski routes, served by 61 lifts between 630 m and 2,448 m, with snowmaking on 79% of slopes. The terrain sits on two separate mountains. Penken is the action side, home to the Harakiri run and PenkenPark. Ahorn is the wide, gentler plateau used by families and ski school groups.

Access is from the valley floor: the Penkenbahn in Mayrhofen, the Horbergbahn in Schwendau and the Moeslbahn at Hochschwendberg all serve Penken, while the Ahornbahn serves Ahorn. There is no piste link between the two mountains, so switching sides means a valley descent and a second ascent. Mountopolis also forms part of the Ski and Glacier World Zillertal 3000, a five-area pass region with 206 km of slopes and 65 lifts reaching 3,250 m.

Which lift pass covers the Mayrhofen ski area?

Two tickets matter. A Mayrhofner Bergbahnen ticket covers Mountopolis only, so 142 km of piste and 61 lifts. From two days upwards, the Zillertal Superskipass is the wider option: the valley tourist board puts its coverage at 546 km of groomed slopes and 180 lifts across four areas (Hochzillertal-Hochfuegen-Spieljoch, Zillertal Arena, Mayrhofner Bergbahnen and the Ski and Glacier World Zillertal 3000). You can choose any duration from 1 to 21 days, and passes of up to 1.5 days are sold for single areas only.

For the 2026/27 winter the Superskipass is valid from 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, and the advance-sale price applies between 26 September and 31 October 2026. Ski buses and most public transport in the valley are included. Day-rate figures quoted by third-party ticket sites disagree with each other, so check mountopolis.at or the Zillertal Arena price page before you book. Chip cards carry a EUR 2 deposit, refunded when the card is returned intact (winter 2025/26 terms).

When does the season run, and when is snow most reliable?

The published 2026/27 dates are staggered. Mayrhofen's Penken lifts are scheduled from 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, with shorter hours (8.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.) until 24 December. The Ahorn side runs from 12 December 2026 to 4 April 2027. The Zillertal Arena operates from 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, with the separate Gerlosstein area limited to 18 December 2026 until 29 March 2027. Hochzillertal-Hochfuegen usually opens between late November and early December and closes in April.

Snow cover is a two-part story. Mayrhofen relies on snowmaking across 79% of its pistes, and Hochzillertal-Hochfuegen reports 100% coverage on its 90.7 km. The fallback for early December or a warm April is the Hintertux Glacier, which skis year-round from 1,500 m up to 3,250 m. Glacier terrain totals 64 km of piste, and the summer setup shrinks to about 20 km with up to 10 lifts.

Which other Zillertal ski areas can you reach from Mayrhofen?

Three neighbours are worth a day each. The Zillertal Arena links Zell am Ziller, Gerlos, Koenigsleiten and Hochkrimml with 150.1 km of piste, 3 km of ski routes and 52 lifts between 580 m and 2,500 m, crossing the Tyrol-Salzburg provincial border. Hochzillertal-Hochfuegen offers 90.7 km and 38 lifts from 558 m to 2,501 m, and combines with Spieljoch in Fuegen for 114 km on 43 lifts under one ticket.

Up the Tux valley, the Hintertux Glacier adds 64 km of piste (17.2 km blue, 35.1 km red, 11.7 km black) and the 12 km Schwarze Pfanne descent, plus the Betterpark snow park that runs from April to the end of May and again from mid-September. Together with Eggalm, Rastkogel, Finkenberg, Penken and Ahorn it forms the Ski and Glacier World Zillertal 3000: 206 km of slopes and 65 lifts.

What do first-time visitors to Mayrhofen usually get wrong?

Three mistakes come up repeatedly. First, treating Penken and Ahorn as one connected mountain: they need separate cable car ascents from the valley, so plan a whole day on each. Second, underestimating Harakiri. Its maximum gradient of 78% makes it a run for confident experts, not for intermediates working up from red pistes. Third, mistiming the last lift. Mayrhofen's lifts generally run 8.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m., with the last cable car ascent at 4.30 p.m. and the Moeslbahn cut-off at 4.00 p.m.

Two practical notes. Slopes are closed outside operating hours for grooming, so late descents are not an option. Ticket machines at the Ahornbahn, Penkenbahn and Horbergbahn sell passes around the clock, while staffed desks open 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. If you want first tracks, the Ahornbahn's Early Bird start at 7.30 a.m. puts you on the 5.5 km ValleyRun before the main crowd arrives.
