As of September 2026, the strongest Salzburg Advent market is the Salzburger Christkindlmarkt on Domplatz and Residenzplatz, open 19 November 2026 to 1 January 2027 with free entry. Hellbrunner Adventzauber (19 November to 24 December, EUR 8) ranks second for families, ahead of Mirabellplatz, the Wolfgangseer Advent at St. Gilgen and the fortress market. The benchmark. It runs 19 November 2026 to 1 January 2027, the longest window of any market here, and it is the only one still trading after 31 December. Around 100 stands fill Domplatz and Residenzplatz inside the UNESCO-listed centre. Entry is free, the site is barrier-free and dogs are allowed. Weekend opening at 09:00 gives a quiet two-hour head start before the crowds build.

More than 700 conifers and 10,000 red baubles do the heavy lifting on atmosphere. The children's world opens Friday 14:00 to 18:00 and 12:00 to 18:00 at weekends, and the Christkind post office is a genuine draw. Gone by 27 December, so time it right.

Weihnachtsmarkt am Mirabellplatz

Across the river from the old town, 19 November to 31 December 2026. It closes at 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, half an hour later than the cathedral market, and food stalls are listed as running longer still. Useful between the holidays, with 10:00 to 19:00 hours from 27 to 30 December and 11:00 to 18:00 on 25 and 26 December. The programme includes Advent music and Nikolaus and Krampus visits.

Wolfgangseer Advent

A lake market rather than a city one, spread across St. Gilgen, Strobl and St. Wolfgang from 20 November to 20 December 2026. Entry is free and the St. Gilgen site is listed at 11:00 to 19:30. The lantern boat trips are the reason to make the trip: every Wednesday at 16:15 and 17:15 from the St. Wolfgang Markt landing stage, 45 minutes each, with live music and readings. Finished before Christmas week.

Adventmarkt auf der Festung Hohensalzburg

The smallest of the five and the highest. It occupies the Burghof of Fortress Hohensalzburg, opening 11:00 to 19:00 on market days including 20 December 2026. More than a hundred Herrnhut stars light Festungsgasse on the way up. A supervised children's programme runs in the Atelier Hödlmoser on every opening day, and the Stefani-Perchten visit at 15:00 on 29 November 2026. Limited trading days keep it off the top spots.

When do Salzburg's Christmas markets open for the 2026 season?

The old town sets the rhythm. The Salzburger Christkindlmarkt always opens on the penultimate Thursday in November, which puts the 2026 edition at 19 November 2026 and the close at 1 January 2027. The same Thursday start applies at Hellbrunn and Mirabellplatz, so 19 November is the day the city switches over.

The end dates are what differ. Hellbrunner Adventzauber stops on 24 December 2026 at 14:00. The Mirabellplatz market runs to 31 December 2026. Only the Domplatz and Residenzplatz market continues into 1 January 2027. Outside the city, the Wolfgangseer Advent covers 20 November to 20 December 2026, a full eleven days shorter at the back end than the old town market.

Which markets are still open between Christmas and New Year?

This is the single biggest planning trap. Plenty of visitors arrive on 27 or 28 December expecting the full set and find half of it packed away. Hellbrunn has been dismantled since Christmas Eve. The Wolfgangseer Advent finished on 20 December 2026.

What remains is the old town. The Christkindlmarkt on Domplatz and Residenzplatz trades through to 1 January 2027, and Mirabellplatz stays open to 31 December 2026, with published hours of 10:00 to 19:00 from 27 to 30 December and again on 31 December. On 25 and 26 December the Mirabellplatz stalls open late, 11:00 to 18:00. Food and drink stands at that market are listed as staying open longer than the craft stalls, so an evening arrival is not wasted.

What does a visit actually cost?

Entry is free at the Salzburger Christkindlmarkt, which the organiser confirms alongside the barrier-free layout and the fact that dogs are allowed. The Wolfgangseer Advent at St. Gilgen is also listed as free entry.

Hellbrunn is the outlier. Admission is EUR 8.00 per person, and that ticket includes a hot drink. The charged window runs Tuesday to Sunday, plus 21 December, until 19:00. Budget for the mug deposit on top at any Austrian market: Glühwein is sold with a returnable cup, and the deposit comes back when you return it. Two adults doing Hellbrunn plus a couple of drinks each realistically spend EUR 40 to EUR 50 before food, so treat the entry fee as a small part of the evening rather than the main cost.

Which market suits families with young children?

Hellbrunn is built around this. The palace courtyard is dressed with more than 700 conifers and 10,000 red baubles, and the separate children's Christmas world opens Friday 14:00 to 18:00 and Saturday and Sunday 12:00 to 18:00. There is a Christmas post office where children write to the Christkind, plus face painting, a Christmas train and sausage grilling at a campfire. Krampus events are scheduled, which is worth knowing if your children scare easily.

The fortress market is the other family option. A supervised children's programme runs in the Atelier Hödlmoser on every opening day, with music, biscuit baking, a reading corner and crafts. The Stefani-Perchten appear at 15:00 on 29 November 2026.

How do you plan one day across several markets?

  1. Start at Hellbrunn after lunch

    On a Tuesday to Friday the palace market does not open until 13:00, so there is no point arriving earlier. Weekends and holidays start at 10:00. Closing is 20:00 on every trading day. Factor in the EUR 8 ticket, which covers one hot drink, and allow 90 minutes to two hours if children use the Christmas world.

  2. Move into the old town for late afternoon

    The Christkindlmarkt on Domplatz and Residenzplatz opens at 10:00 Monday to Thursday and Friday, and at 09:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Arriving around 16:00 gets you the lit stalls without the worst of the 18:00 to 20:00 crush. The site is barrier-free, which matters with a pushchair.

  3. Finish at Mirabellplatz

    Mirabellplatz trades until 20:00 Sunday to Thursday and until 21:00 on Friday and Saturday, so it outlasts a 20:30 old town close on only two nights. Reverse the order on a Friday or Saturday: old town until 21:00, Mirabellplatz last.

  4. Check the 24 December cut-offs before booking a Christmas Eve trip

    On 24 December 2026 Hellbrunn closes at 14:00, Mirabellplatz at 15:00 and the old town market at 15:00. A Christmas Eve visit is a morning activity, not an evening one.

What catches first-time visitors out?

Three things, repeatedly. Hellbrunn is closed on Mondays across the whole 19 November to 24 December 2026 run, and a Monday city break can therefore miss it entirely. Second, the old town market's 09:00 weekend opening is genuinely useful: the hour before 11:00 is the calmest photography window on Domplatz.

Third, people assume the markets are ancient in their current form. The Salzburger Christkindlmarkt as it exists today dates from 1974 and marked its 50th edition in 2024, even though the Tandlmarkt that preceded it on Cathedral Square goes back to the late 15th century. Both facts are true; the continuity claim is not.
