Skiing in Zell am See: Complete 2026/27 Guide
As of September 2026, skiing Zell am See means three mountains on one pass: the Schmittenhöhe (77 km of piste, 760 to 2,000 m), the Kitzsteinhorn glacier above Kaprun (up to 3,029 m) and the Maiskogel family hill. Local terrain totals 138 km. The Ski ALPIN CARD adds Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn for 408 km, at EUR 82 per adult day from 19 December 2026.
What exactly do you get when you ski Zell am See?
Zell am See is a lakeside town at 750 m, and the skiing splits across three separate mountains rather than one big circuit. The Schmittenhöhe rises straight above the town with 77 km of piste (30 km blue, 28 km red, 19 km black) and 27 lift installations between 760 m and 2,000 m. Seven kilometres away in Kaprun sit the Maiskogel and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, together 62.5 km of piste plus 8.9 km of marked ski routes.
Counted as one destination, the local area reaches 138 km of piste and 56 runs: 9 green, 18 blue, 18 red and 11 black. The altitude spread runs from 750 m in town to 3,029 m at the glacier top station. A free ski bus links Zell am See with Kaprun.
How much does a Zell am See lift pass cost in 2026/27?
There is one main ticket, the Ski ALPIN CARD, and it covers all three local mountains plus the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn: 408 km of piste and up to 121 lifts. For the main season starting 19 December 2026, the adult day ticket is EUR 82.00, youth (born 2008 to 2010) EUR 61.50 and child (born 2011 to 2020) EUR 41.00. A half-day ticket costs EUR 70.00 for adults.
Late-season skiing is cheaper: from 13 March 2027 the adult day ticket drops to EUR 74.00. Season passes were EUR 875.00 in presale until 8 December 2026 and EUR 1,049.00 afterwards. Add a EUR 2.00 KeyCard deposit, refunded when you return an undamaged card. Day tickets already work from 3 pm the previous afternoon.
When does the season start and finish here?
The glacier sets the calendar. Ski operations on the Kitzsteinhorn began on 11 October 2025 and are expected to start from 10 October 2026, snow depending. In 2024/25 the Kaprun glacier season ran from 12 October to 18 May. The Ski ALPIN CARD network for 2025/26 was valid from 11 October 2025 to 3 May 2026, which gives a rough shape for the coming winter.
The Schmittenhöhe runs a conventional calendar, roughly mid-December to mid-April, and its pricing seasons confirm the pattern: winter-opening rates apply until 18 December 2026, main season from 19 December 2026, bonus season from 13 March 2027. October and November skiing is glacier-only, on a fraction of the terrain.
How do you move between the Schmittenhöhe, Maiskogel and Kitzsteinhorn?
Start from the right valley station
The Schmittenhöhe has access points in three places: Schüttdorf via the areitXpress, Zell am See via the cityXpress, trassXpress, Sonnenalmbahn and the Schmittenhöhebahn, and Viehhofen via the zellamseeXpress. Choosing the lift nearest your accommodation saves the morning bus.
Use the free ski bus for the Kaprun mountains
Kaprun lies 7 km from Zell am See. There is no ski-lift connection between the Schmittenhöhe and the Kitzsteinhorn, so the transfer is by road. The ski bus is free with a valid lift pass, and the imprint on your KeyCard has to be current for trouble-free use.
Ride the K-ONNECTION from Kaprun village
Since November 2019 you can board in the centre of Kaprun at 768 m and reach the glacier without taking a car. The chain of six gondolas covers 12 km and 2,261 vertical metres, ending at the top station at 3,029 m. It is the longest continuous gondola axis in the Eastern Alps.
Plan the last leg on the 3K
The 3K K-onnection tri-cable gondola is 4,311 m long and carries 32 cabins of 32 people each. The ride to Langwied at 1,975 m takes about 9 minutes. Check the operating hours before a late run: cable car timings shift with weather and snow conditions.
Is Zell am See a sensible choice for beginners and families?
The numbers back it up in parts. Of the 56 local runs, 27 are green or blue, and the Maiskogel at 1,675 m exists mainly as a family hill served by the 10-passenger MK Maiskogelbahn that opened in December 2018. The Schmittenhöhe carries 30 km of blue piste out of 77 km, with 23 huts and mountain restaurants for regrouping.
Family pricing is concrete. Children born in 2020 or later ski free with an accompanying adult. The Junior XPLORE deal puts a Saturday day pass at EUR 15.00 for eligible kids and teens, and from 20 March to 4 April 2027 children in a family ski free. The catch: the Schmittenhöhe's 19 km of black piste and the glacier's steep run 14 (1,000 m long, up to 63% gradient) are not gentle terrain.
What should you weigh up before booking?
Snow reliability is the strongest argument for this region. The Kitzsteinhorn has been a glacier ski area since 1965 and reaches 3,029 m, which is why it opens in October while the Schmittenhöhe tops out at 2,000 m. If you book December or early April, the glacier is your insurance policy.
Size is the weaker point. Locally you have 138 km, less than half the 408 km the Ski ALPIN CARD unlocks, and reaching the Saalbach side means a drive or bus rather than a lift link. The region is busy: the tourist area recorded 1,506,871 overnight stays in the 2025/26 winter. If a single large linked circuit matters more than a glacier, the Skicircus or the Arlberg is the better fit.
Which options rank highest?
Kitzsteinhorn
Austria's first glacier ski area, running since 1965, tops out at a 3,029 m station below the 3,203 m summit. Ski operations opened on 11 October 2025 and are expected from 10 October 2026, with the 2024/25 season closing on 18 May. Combined with the Maiskogel it holds 62.5 km of piste, 8.9 km of ski routes and 24 lifts. Run 14 drops 290 m at up to 63%.
Best for: Early and late-season snow

The home mountain above Zell am See carries the bulk of the local piste: 77 km split into 30 km blue, 28 km red and 19 km black, plus 8 km of ski routes between 760 m and 2,000 m. Twenty-seven installations include six valley feeders from Schüttdorf, Zell am See and Viehhofen, so queues spread out. Five valley runs and 23 huts. Night skiing is included in the pass.
Best for: Ski-in access from town

Kaprun's family mountain reaches 1,675 m and works as the first stage of the glacier link rather than a destination in itself. The MK Maiskogelbahn, a 10-passenger gondola, opened in December 2018 alongside the Kaprun Center; the 3K K-onnection followed on 30 November 2019. Together with four more gondolas they form a 12 km axis climbing 2,261 vertical metres from 768 m in the village.
Best for: Families based in Kaprun
