1.

Alpenrose Familux Resort

4.8 / 5 out of 1186 Google Maps reviews

Care starts on a baby's seventh day of life and runs seven days a week, staffed by 25 kids coaches. The four-star superior house stands opposite the Grubigsteinbahn valley station in Lermoos, so there is no shuttle in the morning. Children's facilities were extended in 2020, and the group renamed the hotel from Leading Family Hotel & Resort Alpenrose in December 2019. Tripadvisor ranked it 1 of 11 Lermoos hotels on 15 September 2026.

Visitor note (Google Maps) "... a very nice and relaxing vacation at Familux Alpenrose."

Best for: Babies and toddlers

amiamo - Familotel Zell am See

Four age groups cover 0 to 2, 3 to 6, 7 to 12 and 13 to 16, which is rare in one building. The hotel sits next to the Schmittenhöhe cable car and practice lifts, and runs its own ski rental, ski kindergarten and pass desk. Forty family apartments share a 300 m² indoor play area and a 500 m² wellness zone. Board is all-inclusive and alcohol-free, so the bill holds few surprises.

Best for: Mixed-age families, 0 to 16

3.

Familienresort Ellmauhof

More than 10,000 m² of indoor and outdoor play space, a mini farm with ponies and a riding academy make this the biggest playground on the list. The Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn starts at the door, with ski-to-door access listed by booking data. The Smaragd all-inclusive system covers meals and the children's programme. Salzburg Airport is about 56 miles away, Zell am See station about 14.

Dachsteinkönig Familux Resort

4.9 / 5 out of 1762 Google Maps reviews

Opened in 2016 at Am Hornspitz 1 in Gosau, the resort counts 105 suites and 12 chalets, the largest capacity here. Falstaff scored it 18 of 20 for location, 19 of 20 for rooms and a full 15 of 15 for wellness. Ski rental, childcare, a shuttle and indoor plus outdoor pools are on site. The lowest listed room rate was EUR 475 on 15 September 2026, so budget accordingly.

Visitor note (Google Maps) "We were at the Dachsteinkönig for 5 days and must say it was excellent."

5.

Das Hopfgarten Familotel Tirol

Childcare covers 3 months to 12 years, Sunday to Friday from 09:00 to 20:30, which is a long day by Austrian standards. The 49 apartments sit 100 m from the pistes and the ski bus stop, with a magic carpet and baby lift next door and courses from age 3. The SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental is the ski area. Child rates ran from EUR 27 to EUR 53 per day on 15 September 2026.

Best for: First ski week on a budget

6.

Familien- & Sportresort Brennseehof

Up to 80 hours of childcare across 7 days beats both Kinderhotels thresholds, the Premium 40-hour rule and the Premium+ 60-hour rule. Group care starts at age 2, baby care comes on request, and the sports programme opens at 08:30. The Kids Club runs over two floors, with a two-storey soft play house, an indoor climbing wall and a ball court. It sits at Feld am See rather than on a piste, so skiing means a drive.

Best for: Active kids aged 2 and up

7.

Stegerhof

4.8 / 5 out of 19 Google Maps reviews

The slow train Jonny reaches the Riesneralm family ski area in about a minute, which removes the daily drive. Free care runs Sunday to Friday, 09:30 to 20:00 for ages 3 and up, and 09:30 to 15:00 for toddlers from 1 to 2.99 years. Baby care under 1 is charged hourly. Cots, monitors, prams and back carriers are lent free. Riesneralm is small, so strong skiers will exhaust it in three days.

Visitor note (Google Maps) "We were able to enjoy a wonderful week at the Stegerhof."

Best for: Quiet, low-cost Styria weeks

What actually counts as a kids' ski hotel in Austria?

Two cooperations define the category. Original Kinderhotels Europa groups around 30 family-run 4-star and 5-star houses across Austria, Italy and Croatia, and grades them: the Premium label requires at least 40 hours of qualified childcare a week, Premium+ at least 60 hours plus dedicated baby care, two qualified carers per house and a 4-star superior standard with indoor and outdoor pools open all year. Familotel is the second cooperation, used by amiamo in Zell am See and Das Hopfgarten in the Brixental.

Familux Resorts is a third, smaller group with two Austrian houses, Alpenrose in Lermoos and Dachsteinkönig in Gosau (the latter open since 2016). None of these are chains in the ownership sense. Members stay family-run, so food, design and price vary widely inside the same badge. Read the childcare timetable, not the logo.

How much does a kids' ski hotel in Austria cost?

Expect two separate cost lines: the room and the children. Falstaff listed a lowest room rate of EUR 475 at Dachsteinkönig Familux Resort on 15 September 2026, which puts the Familux houses at the top of the market. Das Hopfgarten Familotel Tirol sits at the other end, with per-day child rates on Bergfex of EUR 27 for under-threes, EUR 34 for under-sevens, EUR 40 for under-elevens and EUR 53 for under-sixteens on the same date, charged on top of the adult rate.

All-inclusive changes the maths. Familienresort Ellmauhof runs the Smaragd system and amiamo serves alcohol-free all-inclusive board, both covering meals, snacks and soft drinks plus the children's programme. Ski passes, lessons and rental sit outside every one of these packages. Budget those separately for each child aged 3 and over.

Which region suits which age group?

For babies and toddlers, proximity beats piste kilometres. Lermoos in Tyrol works because Alpenrose faces the Grubigsteinbahn valley station, and Hopfgarten works because the pistes and ski bus stop are both 100 m from the door, with a magic carpet and baby lift next to the building. Ski courses in Hopfgarten start at age 3, the usual Austrian threshold.

School-age children who already ski need terrain. Saalbach-Hinterglemm gives Ellmauhof guests the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, and Zell am See puts three ski areas within reach of amiamo. Carinthia and Styria are the value plays: Brennseehof at Feld am See runs up to 80 hours of childcare a week, while Stegerhof reaches the Riesneralm family ski area by shuttle train in about one minute. Riesneralm is small, so confident teenagers will outgrow it inside a week.

How do you book one of these hotels for February half-term?

  1. Fix the childcare window first

Compare the timetable, not the marketing. Das Hopfgarten Familotel Tirol runs care Sunday to Friday, 09:00 to 20:30, for ages 3 months to 12 years. Stegerhof covers 09:30 to 20:00 for children aged 3 and over and stops at 15:00 for toddlers aged 1 to 2.99. Brennseehof spreads up to 80 hours over 7 days from age 2. A Saturday arrival with a Sunday start means you lose the first afternoon.

  2. Check the age floor for your youngest

The floors differ sharply. Alpenrose Familux Resort accepts babies from the 7th day of life. Brennseehof takes group bookings from age 2 and handles babies only on request. Stegerhof charges an hourly fee for babies under 1. If your youngest is under 2, that single line decides the shortlist.

  3. Book 9 to 12 months out for week 8 and 9

Austrian half-term weeks in February overlap with German, Dutch and British school holidays, and the 4-star and 5-star family houses hold roughly 40 to 120 units each. amiamo has 40 family apartments, Das Hopfgarten 49, Dachsteinkönig 105 suites and 12 chalets. Small inventories sell out first for the February peak.

  4. Price the ski school and pass separately

None of the all-inclusive systems include lift passes or lessons. Hotels with an in-house desk shorten the process: amiamo runs ski rental, a ski kindergarten and a ski pass service on site, and Dachsteinkönig lists ski rental among its facilities. Book children's courses at the same time as the room, because group places in February fill faster than beds.

  5. Confirm the transfer

Ellmauhof lies about 56 miles from Salzburg Airport and about 14 miles from Zell am See station. Das Hopfgarten has a railway station in the village and an e-charging station at the property. Families arriving by train should confirm the ski bus stop distance: in Hopfgarten it is 100 m.

What do families get wrong when booking?

Three mistakes recur. First, assuming childcare runs seven days: at Das Hopfgarten it runs Sunday to Friday, and Stegerhof offers six days a week, while Brennseehof is one of the few with a 7-day programme. Second, assuming ski-in, ski-out. Ellmauhof has ski-to-door access, but families with absolute beginners still take the free shuttle to the ski school meeting point in Hinterglemm.

Third, brand confusion. Alpenrose traded as Leading Family Hotel & Resort Alpenrose until December 2019, so older reviews describe a hotel that has since been renamed and had its children's facilities extended in 2020. Kinderhotels Europa, Familotel and Familux are separate cooperations with separate criteria, and a Premium+ badge on one hotel says nothing about a Familotel down the valley.

What are the alternatives to a dedicated family hotel?

Apartments with resort childcare are the usual fallback. Das Hopfgarten itself is an apartment hotel, 49 units with separate children's rooms, kettles and fridges, which shows the hybrid works. In Hopfgarten there is also a daycare facility in the same building as the gondola, so families in other accommodation can arrange care near the lift.

The second alternative is a standard 4-star hotel plus ski school. Austrian ski schools take children from age 3, matching the minimum at Das Hopfgarten, and many resorts run their own kindergarten. That route is cheaper, but it rarely covers evenings: family hotels here supervise until 20:00 or 20:30, which is the part a standalone ski school does not replace.

How is this ranking computed?

  • Childcare hours and minimum age: 30%
  • Distance to lift and beginner slope: 25%
  • Indoor and outdoor play space: 20%
  • Board and price transparency: 15%
  • Size and family terrain of the ski area: 10%
