Best Ski Resorts in Austria: 2026/27 Ranking
As of September 2026, the largest and most complete Austrian ski areas for the 2026/27 winter are Ski Arlberg (305 km of pistes, 88 lifts), the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn (270 km, 70 lifts) and SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental (275 km, 81 lifts). Ischgl, Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis and KitzSki follow on altitude, family terrain and lift quality. Ranking below uses six weighted criteria.
Best Ski Resorts in Austria: 2026/27 Ranking, ranked
Ski Arlberg
The benchmark for size in Austria: 88 lifts and cable cars, 305 km of marked slopes and a further 200 km of open terrain linking St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben, Lech and Zurs. The Lech-Zurs sector alone covers about 110 km between 1,450 m and 2,811 m. St. Anton, at 1,304 m, is where Austria's first ski school opened in 1921, and the Run of Fame circuit strings the network together.
Best for: Most terrain on one pass

270 km of pistes and 70 lifts, graded 140 km blue, 112 km red and 18 km black, which is why intermediates rate it so highly. More than 60 huts sit on the network across Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Leogang and Fieberbrunn. The Ski ALPIN CARD extends the ticket to roughly 408 km and 121 lifts with Zell am See and Kaprun, and since winter 2025/26 Epic Pass holders get five days here.
Best for: Best intermediate cruising

275 km of slopes, 81 lifts and 80 huts spread across nine villages: Ellmau, Going, Scheffau, Soll, Hopfgarten, Itter, Kelchsau, Westendorf and Brixen im Thale. Family pricing is unusually clear, with children born in 2021 or later skiing free and a family card that frees further children once two adults and the eldest child buy tickets. High season runs 19 December 2026 to 12 March 2027.
Visitor note (Google Maps) "A very beautiful ski world where you can still ski very well."
Best for: Best value for families

239 km of groomed slopes straddling Tyrol and Switzerland, with pass validity from 26 November 2026 to 2 May 2027, one of the longest non-glacier windows in Austria. The VIP and Silvretta tickets cover 76 lift facilities including Galtur, Kappl and See, with a free ski bus between valleys. Samnaun's duty-free status and the Top of the Mountain concerts are part of the package.
Best for: Longest high-altitude season
Official website See full factsSerfaus-Fiss-Ladis
214 km of slopes, 89 marked pistes and 68 lifts above three linked villages, with terrain climbing beyond 2,800 m for late-season cover. The 2026/27 season is estimated at 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027. Two published price lists apply, one reduced for guest card holders, and a free ski bus connects Serfaus, Fiss and Ladis, so staying in the cheaper villages costs no ski time.
Best for: Best for young children

179 km of groomed pistes on 90 marked slopes served by 58 lifts, home to the Hahnenkamm downhill course. Pricing is banded: Premium Season covers 20 December 2026 to 13 March 2027, with Super Saver rates before 5 December 2026 and after 30 March 2027. The estimated 2026/27 window is 6 November 2026 to 11 April 2027. Altitude is modest, so mid-winter dates are the safer booking.
Best for: Best race heritage and lift comfort

Ski Arlberg is the terrain leader. The Arlberger Bergbahnen list 88 lifts and cable cars, 305 km of marked slopes and 200 km of open, unpatrolled terrain across St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben, Lech and Zurs. St. Anton itself sits at 1,304 m, while the Lech-Zurs sector spans 1,450 m to 2,811 m and accounts for around 110 km of that piste network.
Two areas sit just behind. SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental counts 275 km of slopes, 81 lifts and nine villages including Ellmau, Soll, Scheffau and Westendorf. The Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn has 270 km and 70 lifts, split into 140 km blue, 112 km red and 18 km black. Raw kilometres are not the whole story: Ischgl has 239 km but tops out far higher, with a season running from late November into early May.
How much does a lift pass cost for the 2026/27 season?
Austrian day passes are priced by season band, not by a single flat rate. KitzSki splits 2026/27 into three: Premium Season from 20 December 2026 to 13 March 2027, Saver Season from 6 to 19 December 2026 and again 14 to 29 March 2027, and Super Saver from the season start until 5 December 2026 and from 30 March 2027 onwards. Published KitzSki day rates for the previous winter ranged from about EUR 31 to EUR 76 depending on band.
SkiWelt applies its high-season tariff from 19 December 2026 to 12 March 2027, with the standard low-season rate used during the extended Ellmau season from 30 March to 4 April 2027. Ischgl sells its VIP and Silvretta passes for a validity window of 26 November 2026 to 2 May 2027. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis runs two price lists, one reduced for holders of the local guest card and one without it.
When do Austrian resorts open and close in 2026/27?
Glaciers go first. The Pitztal Glacier, Tyrol's highest ski area with terrain to 3,440 m, is scheduled to open on 26 September 2026 and run until 2 May 2027, with its lower Rifflsee sector following in December. The Stubai Glacier operates from October into May, with top lifts above 3,000 m and a high point of 3,210 m.
Village-based areas start later. Ischgl's pass validity begins 26 November 2026 and ends 2 May 2027. Kitzbuhel's estimated 2026/27 window is 6 November 2026 to 11 April 2027, and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is estimated at 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027. Obertauern, at 1,630 m to 2,315 m, typically runs from late November to early May. If you are booking late April, check glacier and high-altitude areas first.
How do I choose between Austria's big ski areas?
Set your terrain budget
Decide how much piste you actually need. A one-week trip rarely exhausts 150 km. Sizes vary widely: Ski Arlberg has 305 km on 88 lifts, Ischgl 239 km, Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis 214 km on 68 lifts across 89 marked pistes, and the Stubai Glacier just 68 km on 26 lifts. Smaller areas can still deliver long descents: Stubai has a 10 km run, one of the longest pisted descents in Europe.
Check altitude before dates
Match altitude to your travel window. For early December or late April, favour areas with high terrain: Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis reaches above 2,800 m, Lech-Zurs tops out at 2,811 m, and the Stubai Glacier at 3,210 m. Lower valley resorts such as Mayrhofen (630 m to 2,500 m) are better booked in the 19 December to 12 March core of the season.
Price the pass band, not the headline
Work out which price band your dates fall into. At KitzSki, 20 December 2026 to 13 March 2027 is Premium Season, while 30 March 2027 onwards is Super Saver. A week shifted by ten days can drop a full band. SkiWelt's family rules also matter: children born in 2021 or later ski free, child tariffs cover birth years 2011 to 2020, and youth tariffs cover 2008 to 2010.
Confirm the multi-area coverage
Check what else your ticket opens. The Ski ALPIN CARD links the Skicircus with Schmittenhohe in Zell am See and the Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun for roughly 408 km and 121 lifts. Ischgl's VIP and Silvretta passes are valid at 76 facilities across Ischgl/Samnaun, Galtur, Kappl and See, with a free ski bus between them.
Which multi-area pass gives the widest coverage?
Two structures dominate. The Ski ALPIN CARD combines the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, the Schmittenhohe in Zell am See and the Kitzsteinhorn above Kaprun into roughly 408 km of pistes and 121 lifts on one ticket. From winter 2025/26 that network became an Epic Pass partner: Epic Pass and Epic Adaptive Pass holders receive five ski days in the ALPIN CARD regions.
In the Paznaun valley, the Ischgl VIP and Silvretta passes cover 76 lift facilities across Ischgl/Samnaun, Galtur, Kappl and See, and the Paznaun/Samnaun season ticket for 2025/26 also included entry to the Top of the Mountain concerts, night skiing and tobogganing evenings. Single-area tickets still make sense in bigger networks: Ski Arlberg's own 305 km and SkiWelt's 275 km are more than most skiers cover in seven days.
What do first-time visitors get wrong?
Three errors recur. First, booking a low resort in a warm spring: Mayrhofen tops out at 2,500 m, while the Stubai Glacier holds natural snow from October to May. Second, ignoring free transport. Ischgl's pass includes a free ski bus to Galtur, Kappl, See and Mathon, the Stubai Glacier is reachable by free ski bus about 45 minutes from Innsbruck, and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis runs a free bus between its three villages.
Third, missing family discounts. SkiWelt's family card makes further children free once two adults and the eldest child buy winter tickets, provided all members live at the same address. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis publishes separate reduced rates for guest card holders, so book accommodation that issues the card before buying passes.
