Best Thermal Spas for Families in Austria
For September 2026, Sonnentherme Lutzmannsburg ranks first among Austrian family thermal spas, with 18 slides, 24 pools and a separate baby world. Therme Amadé is the cheapest for small children at EUR 4 for ages 3 to 5.9, while AQUA DOME pairs a kids' ship with an alpine adult spa.

Official website See full factsHow much does a family day at an Austrian therme cost?
Adult day tickets at the main family spas run from about EUR 35 to EUR 43. Therme Amadé in Altenmarkt lists EUR 35 for adults aged 16 and over without sauna, EUR 23.50 for ages 6 to 15.9 and EUR 4 for ages 3 to 5.9. Sonnentherme Lutzmannsburg lists EUR 42.50 for adults, EUR 29.40 for ages 6 to 15 and EUR 21.40 up to the sixth birthday. AQUA DOME day tickets start at EUR 43.20 for adults and EUR 22.40 per child. All figures checked on 25 September 2026.
Bundles change the maths. At Piratenwelt Aquapulco a single adult day ticket is EUR 39.00 and a youth ticket EUR 34.50, but the family ticket for two adults and two youths is EUR 134.00, which is EUR 13 less than four singles. Two adults plus two children aged 1 to 5.9 costs EUR 104.00. A combination ticket that adds the Tropicana thermal area starts at EUR 51.50 per adult.
Which therme is best if you are travelling with a baby or toddler?
Sonnentherme Lutzmannsburg builds its whole offer around the under-sixes. The Baby World has a shallow baby pool and a baby channel for parent-and-child water play, and toddlers get their first slide metres on the Quaxi and Flipper slides. The site has 24 pools and six themed worlds in total, so older siblings are not stuck in the toddler zone.
AQUA DOME takes a different route: children under 3 enter free, and the Alpen Arche Noah children's area is built as a ship with two pools, a large slide and indoor play rooms (the Kuckucksnest creative room, the Kletterkitz climbing room and a cinema room). H2O Hotel-Therme-Resort admits children from age 0 to its pools and runs a daily animation programme plus the HopiHo indoor play world, which matters on the wet days that Styria delivers in spring and autumn.
What age rules and sauna restrictions apply?
Age bands are not standardised. Piratenwelt Aquapulco counts adults from 16, youths from 6 to 15.9 and children from 1 to 5.9. Therme Amadé uses the same youth band of 6 to 15.9, prices ages 3 to 5.9 at EUR 4, and only admits under-12s in the company of an adult. AQUA DOME gives free entry below age 3 and a reduced tariff from 3 to 14.
Saunas are where families get caught out. At H2O Hotel-Therme-Resort the sauna area is open to guests from age 15 and is charged separately at EUR 6 per unit and night. Therme Amadé charges EUR 44 for an adult day ticket with sauna against EUR 35 without, and Sonnentherme Lutzmannsburg adds EUR 6 for its Sauna World. Prices checked 25 September 2026.
When should you go to avoid the worst crowds?
Opening hours give you more room than most families use. Therme Amadé runs 09:00 to 22:00 and is open 365 days a year, with shortened hours on 24 December (09:00 to 15:00) and 31 December (09:00 to 19:00) and a 10:00 start on 1 January. AQUA DOME opens daily from 09:00 to 23:00, with the sauna from 10:00. Piratenwelt Aquapulco runs 09:00 to 22:00 Monday to Friday and until 24:00 on Saturdays.
Late entry is the cheapest slot at Bad Schallerbach: the evening ticket from 18:00 starts at EUR 33.50 and a two-hour ticket starts at EUR 32.00, against EUR 37.50 for a day ticket at the gate. Aquapulco tickets can be booked a maximum of 21 days in advance, so school-holiday Saturdays need a diary note.
Which regions pair a family therme with other holiday plans?
Geography decides a lot here. AQUA DOME sits at Oberlängenfeld 140 in 6444 Längenfeld, in the Tyrolean Ötztal, which makes it a rain-day or post-ski option for families already in the valley. Therme Amadé is at Thermenplatz 1 in 5541 Altenmarkt im Pongau, inside the Salzburg ski belt. Both work as half-day trips rather than destinations in themselves.
The flatland spas are the reverse. Piratenwelt Aquapulco is at Promenade 1 in 4701 Bad Schallerbach in Upper Austria, and the resort guest card gives reductions at nearby attractions including Zoo Schmiding. H2O Hotel-Therme-Resort lies at the A2 motorway exit Bad Waltersdorf in eastern Styria near Graz, with free parking in front of the resort. Sonnentherme Lutzmannsburg is in southern Burgenland, close to the Hungarian border.
What do families get wrong when booking?
Three mistakes recur. First, buying single tickets when a family bundle exists: at Piratenwelt Aquapulco two adults and two youths pay EUR 134.00 as a family ticket instead of EUR 147.00 in singles. Second, paying for a sauna nobody can use: the H2O sauna area starts at age 15, so parents of primary-school children are buying an upgrade they cannot take.
Third, mismatching the site to the child's age. A five-year-old at AQUA DOME uses one ship-shaped area, while the same child at Sonnentherme Lutzmannsburg has a baby channel, two starter slides and a dedicated world. Conversely, teenagers want the 270 m XXL Monster Ride or the 202 m VR Twister, not a paddling pool. Check the slide list before the tariff.
