Official website See full factsHow much skiing does the Zillertal actually offer?
The Zillertal markets itself as one region, but it is really four separate ski areas sharing a valley and a ticket. Together they count 546 km of groomed piste and 180 lifts. The Zillertal Arena is the biggest single unit at 150 km on 52 lifts, followed by Mayrhofen with 142 km plus 8.7 km of ski routes on 61 lifts.
Hochzillertal-Hochfügen sits in the middle of the pack, listed with 43 slopes and 39 lifts. Hintertux Glacier is comparatively small at 64 km on 20 lifts, but it is the highest, topping out at 3,250 m. Spieljoch at Fügen closes the list with 21.1 km on 10 lifts. Only Mayrhofen and Hintertux share a combined winter ticket with Eggalm and Rastkogel; the rest need the valley-wide pass to connect.
Which Zillertal ski area fits your ability?
Beginners are best served at the valley entrance. Spieljoch has 21.1 km of piste on 10 lifts, with a magic carpet, a practice lift, a Funslope and a Funpark, and childcare through the Zwergerl Club at Fügen, Hochfügen and Kaltenbach. The 7 km valley run gives novices a long, low-gradient descent once they progress.
Intermediates get the widest choice in the Zillertal Arena, where the 51 runs split 7 green, 16 blue, 19 red and 9 black between 580 m and 2,500 m. Hintertux is red-heavy: 35.1 km of its 64 km is graded red, against 17.2 km blue and 11.7 km black.
Strong skiers come to Mayrhofen for the Harakiri on Penken, which reaches a 78 percent gradient (38 degrees) across about 1,500 m of length and 375 m of vertical. Artificial snow on that pitch often means ice.
Which lift pass do you need, and what does it cover?
The Zillertal Superskipass is the umbrella ticket. It covers all 546 km of piste and 180 lifts across Hochzillertal-Hochfügen-Spieljoch, the Zillertal Arena, the Mayrhofner Bergbahnen and the Ski & Gletscherwelt Zillertal 3000, and it runs for the 2026/27 season from 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027. Multi-day passes are valid on consecutive days only, with interruptions not permitted except on optional-day products.
Single-area tickets are cheaper for short stays. Hochfügen sells three options: a Hochfügen-Hochzillertal-Spieljoch day ticket, a combined ticket and the Superskipass, with a EUR 2.00 deposit on the chip card. The Zillertal Arena runs an advance-sale price between 26 September and 31 October 2026, and its pass also works in the Wildkogel Arena. Mayrhofen and Hintertux joined the Epic Pass for 2025/26; Vail Resorts listed the Epic Pass at USD 1,051 in its May 2025 announcement.
When does the 2026/27 Zillertal season run?
Most of the valley works to the same calendar: 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, snow permitting, in the Zillertal Arena, at Hochfügen and on the Superskipass. Gerlosstein is shorter, opening 18 December 2026 and closing 29 March 2027. The Zillertal 3000 combination that adds Eggalm, Rastkogel, Penken and Ahorn to the Hintertux ticket also starts on 4 December 2026.
Hintertux is the exception. Glacier terrain of roughly 20 km stays open outside winter at a reduced ticket price, which makes it the valley's autumn and summer option. For snowfall timing, OnTheSnow records an average of 219 cm a year at Mayrhofen, with 46 cm in December, 71 cm in January, 43 cm in February and 44 cm in March. Pistes at Hochzillertal-Kaltenbach are open only from 07:30 to 16:30.
How do you choose between the Zillertal ski areas?
Fix your snow risk first
Valley floors here are low: 580 m in the Arena, 610 m at Spieljoch and 630 m at Mayrhofen. If you are booking early December or after late March, weight altitude heavily. Hintertux tops out at 3,250 m and holds about 20 km of skiable glacier even in summer, so it is the only area in the valley that does not depend on a good winter.
Match terrain volume to trip length
For a week, the 150 km of the Zillertal Arena or the 142 km at Mayrhofen give enough variety without daily transfers. For a long weekend, Spieljoch (21.1 km, 10 lifts) or Hochzillertal-Hochfügen (43 slopes, 39 lifts) are easier to ski out and cheaper to cover with a local ticket.
Pick the ticket, not the resort
Decide whether you will actually use 546 km and 180 lifts. If you plan two or more areas, the Superskipass makes sense, and it runs 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027 on consecutive days only. If you will stay put, buy the local day or multi-day pass and budget the EUR 2.00 chip-card deposit.
Check the hard runs before you commit
Mayrhofen's Harakiri (78 percent, 375 m vertical) and Spieljoch's 2.7 km Heiße Kante are the two named test pieces. In the Arena, black terrain is 9 of 51 runs, so advanced skiers chasing steeps should base at Mayrhofen or plan a Hintertux day for its 11.7 km of black piste.
How do you get there and move between the areas?
Innsbruck Airport is the closest gateway, within 45 miles of Mayrhofen and Hintertux according to Vail Resorts. From the valley floor, the Zillertal ski passes include free use of local ski buses and of Zillertaler Verkehrsbetriebe trains and scheduled buses, with the steam train excluded. That matters because the four areas are not lift-linked to each other.
Access points differ. The Spieljoch cable car starts in Fügen village, the Arena spreads from Zell am Ziller over the Gerlos Alpine Road to Gerlos and Königsleiten on the Salzburg side, and Hochfügen is reached by a mountain road off the valley. Two practical details: daily tickets at Hochfügen can be returned until 13:00, and Epic Pass access to Mayrhofen and Hintertux for 2025/26 holders ran only to 15 May 2026.
