Best Ski Resorts in Upper Austria: 5 Areas Ranked
As of September 2026, Upper Austria offers a small but honest field: skiresort.info holds test reports for only seven areas in the state. Hinterstoder-Höss leads on 39.9 km of pistes to 2,000 m with about 90 percent snowmaking. Dachstein West is larger at 160 km, though Russbach and Annaberg lie in Salzburg. Krippenstein, Wurzeralm and Hochficht complete the five.
Best Ski Resorts in Upper Austria: 5 Areas Ranked, ranked
Hinterstoder-Höss
The strongest all-round area that sits entirely inside the state. It offers 39.9 km of pistes on 13 lifts between 600 m and 2,000 m, with about 90 percent of the terrain covered by roughly 290 snow guns and lances. The 10-seat Hössbahn leaves from the village centre, hourly capacity reaches 16,291 people, and the Hannes Trinkl World Cup downhill gives fast skiers a real benchmark run.
Best for: Strong intermediates and race-slope skiers

The biggest choice on the list, rated 4.1 of 5 by skiresort.info and first in the state for slope length. Operator figures give 160 km of groomed runs linking Gosau, Russbach and Annaberg, including a 44 km circuit, with 46 runs and 25 lifts. Two of the three villages are in Salzburg. Multi-day tickets also cover Krippenstein and Feuerkogel, which no rival matches.
Best for: Mileage-hungry groups and multi-area weeks

A specialist mountain rather than a piste resort. Groomed terrain adds up to just 12 km (9 km red, 3 km blue), while 30 km of marked off-piste variants and an 11 km descent draw freeriders from across the country. Lifts total six installations moving 4,622 people per hour, the span runs 680 m to 2,100 m, and snowmaking reaches only about half the area.
Best for: Off-piste skiers and long descents

The quiet family option in the Pyhrn-Priel region. Its 22.5 km of pistes run on 8 lifts between 810 m and 1,870 m, with 1,060 m of vertical on the long descent. A funicular carries skiers to the 1,400 m base, and the A9 exit 57 puts the car park minutes from the motorway. The 2024/25 entry day rate started at EUR 41 adult and EUR 20.50 child.
Best for: Families wanting short queues and easy access

The only sizeable ski area in the northern half of the state, in the Böhmerwald near the Czech border. It runs 13 marked pistes on 9 lifts, plus a funpark and a funslope. Children born in 2021 or later pay EUR 5 for a day ticket and parents get a 10 percent family reduction. The announced winter runs 28 November 2026 to 21 March 2027, a shorter window than the alpine areas.
Best for: Day trips from Linz and first-timers on a budget

The state's lift-served skiing sits in two separate pockets. Most of it lines the southern border with Styria, in the Pyhrn-Priel region around Hinterstoder and Spital am Pyhrn and in the Salzkammergut around Gosau and Obertraun. The one outlier is Hochficht, up in the Böhmerwald of the northern Mühlviertel. The field is genuinely small: skiresort.info lists seven test reports and 34 evaluations for the whole state, so a top five covers nearly everything worth a dedicated trip.
On the published rankings, Dachstein West takes first place for rating (4.1 of 5) and for slope length in the skiresort.info survey. Hinterstoder-Höss follows, then Kasberg at Grünau im Almtal. Ranked by summit altitude the order changes: Dachstein Krippenstein tops the list at 2,100 m, ahead of Hinterstoder-Höss at 2,000 m, Wurzeralm at 1,870 m and Feuerkogel above Ebensee.
What does skiing in Upper Austria cost?
This is the region's strongest argument. Austrian media reported that the priciest day tickets in the country's top resorts passed EUR 80 for winter 2025/26, reaching about EUR 83. Nothing in Upper Austria comes close. Wurzeralm published entry-level day rates of EUR 41 for adults, EUR 33 for youths and EUR 20.50 for children in the 2024/25 season, and prices at both Pyhrn-Priel areas are dynamic, so the earlier you book online the less you pay.
Family rules matter more than headline rates. At Dachstein West and Dachstein Krippenstein, children born in 2020 or later ski free alongside a paying parent when family proof is shown. Hinterstoder listed a KidsCard mini at EUR 4 per day for the 2025/26 high season. Hochficht charges EUR 5 for children born in 2021 or later and applies a 10 percent reduction on children's and youth tickets bought by a parent.
Watch the calendar too. Dachstein West set cheaper price windows from 5 to 19 December 2025 and again from 16 March to 6 April 2026, with the higher rates in between. Krippenstein ticket prices carry 10 percent VAT and were published for the 2025/26 winter.
How do you pick the right area for your group?
Start with the snow window
Announced operating dates for the coming winter run 28 November 2026 to 29 March 2027 at Hinterstoder, 5 December 2026 to 29 March 2027 at Dachstein West and 28 November 2026 to 21 March 2027 at Hochficht. If you can only travel in late March, the Pyhrn-Priel and Dachstein areas are the safer booking. Early-December trips favour the higher terrain, since Hinterstoder can machine-cover about 90 percent of its pistes and Krippenstein only about half.
Match terrain to the weakest skier
Krippenstein has just 3 km of blue runs against 9 km of red, so a nervous beginner will run out of comfortable terrain in an afternoon. Dachstein West, with 46 runs on a 44 km linked circuit, and Wurzeralm, with 22.5 km on a compact plateau, both absorb mixed abilities better. Hochficht, at 13 runs, is fine for a first weekend on skis.
Check how you reach the snow
Wurzeralm is reached from A9 exit 57 Spital am Pyhrn, then a short run on the B138, with a funicular lifting you to the base at 1,400 m between 09:00 and 16:30 on weekdays. At Hinterstoder the 10-seat Hössbahn starts in the village centre. Dachstein West uses three gondolas as its main access points.
Price the whole party, not the adult
Add up the child rates before comparing headline day tickets. Two children born after 2020 travel free at Dachstein West and Krippenstein, which can outweigh a lower adult rate elsewhere. At Hochficht the under-fives pay EUR 5 and a parent purchase triggers a 10 percent family discount. Multi-day tickets at Hinterstoder and Wurzeralm cover both areas, whereas day tickets are valid at one only.
What mistakes do first-time visitors make?
The most common one is buying a single-day ticket at Krippenstein and expecting the wider Dachstein network. Tickets of one day or less are valid on that mountain alone. From 1.5 days upward the pass issued is a Dachstein West ticket, which then opens Gosau, Russbach, Annaberg, Feuerkogel Ebensee, Karkogel and several Lammertal lifts. Groups doing a long weekend often save simply by starting the ticket half a day earlier.
The second mistake is treating Krippenstein as a piste area. With 12 km groomed and 30 km of marked variants, its value lies off the corduroy, and an 11 km descent with 1,500 vertical metres per ride demands fitness and avalanche awareness. The third is misjudging Wurzeralm: the skiing sits above the funicular base at 1,400 m, so there is no run back to the valley station, and the last lift down is at 16:30.
Which alternatives are worth considering beyond the top five?
Kasberg at Grünau im Almtal ranks third in the state for slope length on skiresort.info, behind Dachstein West and Hinterstoder-Höss, and it is the obvious backup when the Pyhrn-Priel car parks fill on a February Saturday. Feuerkogel above Ebensee comes fourth by summit altitude and is included on Dachstein West multi-day tickets, so a week-long pass can add a Traunsee day at no extra cost.
Skiers based in Linz should also weigh geography rather than size alone. Hochficht is the only substantial area in the northern half of the state, with 13 runs and 9 lifts, while every other option here means driving south towards Kirchdorf an der Krems or the Salzkammergut. If the aim is maximum mileage, the Salzburg sectors of Dachstein West, Russbach and Annaberg, are on the same ticket as Gosau.
