5.

Weihnachtsmarkt am Spittelberg

4.5 / 5 out of 495 Google Maps reviews

Runs 13 November to 23 December 2026, 41 days, through the lanes of Spittelberggasse, Schrankgasse and Gutenberggasse. Weekday opening is late: 14:00 to 21:30 Monday to Friday, 11:00 to 21:30 on Saturday and Sunday, so an early-afternoon arrival finds shuttered stalls. The Kulturverein Forum Spittelberg has organised it since 1993. Nearby WIPARK garages charge EUR 1.90 per hour, or EUR 3.90 flat between 18:00 and 02:00.

Visitor note (Google Maps) "Nice Christmas market, sometimes a bit cramped when it's busy"

Best for: Crafts, evenings only

Altwiener Christkindlmarkt

4.7 / 5 out of 140 Google Maps reviews

The Freyung market runs 14 November to 23 December 2026, daily 10:00 to 21:00, the widest daily window among the craft markets. It starts a day after the main 13 November wave, a detail that catches out visitors arriving on the Friday. Trade listings trace the market's lineage to 1772. U3 Herrengasse and bus line 1A both stop within a couple of minutes' walk of the square.

Visitor note (Google Maps) "nice Christkindlmarkt - the stalls unfortunately have become a bit generic"

Best for: Widest daily window for crafts

7.

Art Advent Karlsplatz

4.5 / 5 out of 476 Google Maps reviews

Art Advent runs 13 November to 23 December 2026, daily 12:00 to 20:00, the narrowest daily window of the large markets. The divina art association requires stallholders to have conceived and produced their own goods, and the food offer is organic. In 2025 the market opened only on 21 November, so the 2026 start is eight days earlier. Entry is free and the Karlskirche stands directly behind the stalls.

Visitor note (Google Maps) "Very nice but unfortunately very crowded.... top handicrafts"

Best for: Maker-only stalls

8.

Weihnachtsmarkt Am Hof

4.5 / 5 out of 157 Google Maps reviews

Runs 13 November to 23 December 2026, 41 days, on one of the oldest squares in the first district. Hours split by day: 11:00 to 21:00 Monday to Thursday, 10:00 to 21:00 Friday to Sunday and on public holidays, with food served until 22:00. The 23 December close means it is no help for a trip between Christmas and New Year. Entry is free, and Freyung is a five-minute walk away.

Visitor note (Google Maps) "Nice rustic Christmas market with art, food and drinks."

Best for: Early weekend opening

When do Vienna's Christmas markets open and close in 2026?

Two markets jump the queue. The Weihnachtsmarkt Schloss Schoenbrunn and the Weihnachtsdorf am Stephansplatz both open on 6 November 2026. A week later, on 13 November, the bulk of the season starts at once: the Wiener Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz, Spittelberg, Am Hof, Art Advent on Karlsplatz and the Schwarzenbergplatz market. The Altwiener Christkindlmarkt on the Freyung follows on 14 November. A third wave on 20 November adds the Weihnachtsdorf on Maria-Theresien-Platz and the winter market on Riesenradplatz in the Prater.

Closing dates fall into three groups. The craft markets (Spittelberg, Freyung, Karlsplatz, Am Hof) finish on 23 December 2026. Rathausplatz, Stephansplatz, Maria-Theresien-Platz and Schwarzenbergplatz run to 26 December. Schoenbrunn and the Prater winter market continue to 6 January 2027.

Which markets are still open between Christmas and New Year?

Between 27 December 2026 and 6 January 2027 the choice narrows sharply. The Weihnachtsmarkt Schloss Schoenbrunn switches to 10:00 to 19:00 daily from 25 December and keeps going to Epiphany, with a skating rink in the forecourt operating Monday to Friday 13:00 to 18:30 and 11:00 to 19:00 at weekends and on public holidays. The Prater winter market on Riesenradplatz also runs to 6 January, 12:00 to 22:00 on weekdays and 11:00 to 22:00 at weekends.

The Rathausplatz market itself shuts after 26 December, but the Vienna Ice World on the same square stays open to 6 January 2027 and closes only on 31 December, when the square becomes a Silvesterpfad stage. Anyone arriving on 27 December should plan around Schoenbrunn and the Prater rather than the Ring.

What are the daily opening hours, and what changes on 24 December?

Daily windows vary by more than eight hours across the city. Rathausplatz is the most generous at 10:00 to 22:00. The Freyung runs 10:00 to 21:00, Stephansplatz 11:00 to 21:00, Schoenbrunn 10:00 to 21:00 until 23 December. Art Advent on Karlsplatz opens only from 12:00 to 20:00. Spittelberg does not open until 14:00 from Monday to Friday, moving to 11:00 on Saturday and Sunday, and closes at 21:30.

Christmas Eve is the trap. On 24 December 2026 Rathausplatz closes at 18:30, Schoenbrunn at 16:00 and Stephansplatz at 16:00. Austrian families celebrate on the evening of the 24th, so stalls wind down in the afternoon. On 25 and 26 December, Stephansplatz runs 11:00 to 19:00 and Schoenbrunn 10:00 to 19:00.

How do I fit the main markets into one day by date?

  1. Pick a date after 20 November

Before 13 November only Schoenbrunn and Stephansplatz are running. From 20 November 2026 every market on this page is open, including Maria-Theresien-Platz and the Prater. That single date turns a two-stop trip into a nine-stop one, so it is the cheapest planning decision you can make.

  2. Start at Schoenbrunn at 10:00

Schoenbrunn opens at 10:00 and sits at U4 Schoenbrunn, with trams 10 and 60 and bus 10A at the gate. Give it 90 minutes for a relaxed browse of the 90-plus huts. December daylight in Vienna ends around 16:00, so an early palace visit banks the only usable daylight of the day.

  3. Move into the first district by early afternoon

Take U4 back towards Karlsplatz, where Art Advent opens at 12:00 and closes at 20:00. From there, Stephansplatz (11:00 to 21:00), Am Hof and the Freyung (10:00 to 21:00) form a walkable triangle of under 15 minutes end to end. All three charge nothing to enter.

  4. Save Spittelberg and Rathausplatz for after dark

Spittelberg does not open until 14:00 on weekdays, so it is an evening stop, running to 21:30. Rathausplatz stays open until 22:00 and is the last market to close each night. U2 Rathaus puts you on the square directly, and trams 1, 71 and D also stop there.

  5. Recheck operator sites in the week you travel

Published hours change at short notice, and some 2026 entries are still labelled expected rather than confirmed, including 1 January at the Prater. Check christkindlmarkt.at, weihnachtsmarkt-schoenbrunn.at, altwiener-markt.at and weihnachtsmarkt-hof.at within seven days of arrival rather than relying on a listing page.

What does a Vienna market trip actually cost?

Entry is free at every market listed here, including Schoenbrunn, Stephansplatz, Spittelberg, Art Advent and the Prater winter market. You pay only for food, drink and goods. Mulled wine is normally sold with a refundable mug deposit, returned when you hand the cup back.

Driving is the expensive option. WIPARK garages at Stiftgasse (1070) and Windmuehlgasse (1060) offer Spittelberg visitors EUR 1.90 per hour, or a flat EUR 3.90 between 18:00 and 02:00, as listed in September 2026. Accommodation carries Vienna's Ortstaxe, set at 5% per night since 1 July 2026, on top of the room rate. November nights are materially cheaper than the 13 to 23 December peak, and Schoenbrunn's 6 November start means an early trip is not a compromise.

Which 2026 dates are still worth double-checking?

Two entries are unsettled. The Weihnachtsdorf at Schloss Belvedere is listed by some 2026 guides as 13 November to 31 December and by others as 20 November to 31 December, and the market is reported to be moving to the opposite side of the pond from 2026. The 31 December close is the only point every listing agrees on. The Prater's 1 January hours are published by the operator as expected rather than confirmed.

Spittelberg is also listed inconsistently: most sources give 13 November to 23 December 2026, one gives 12 November. Weekend closing is quoted as both 21:00 and 21:30. Treat 13 November and 21:00 as the safe assumptions and verify with the organiser, Kulturverein Forum Spittelberg.

How is this ranking computed?

  • Season length and post-Christmas coverage: 30%
  • Date confirmation by the operator: 20%
  • Scale (stalls or huts): 20%
  • Daily opening-hours window: 15%
  • Public transport access: 15%
