When does the ice skating season run in Vienna?

The city works on a long winter window rather than a single opening date. The Wiener Eislauf-Verein opened its 2025/26 public season on 8 November 2025, and in earlier seasons it has put a reduced surface into service from 21 October. Indoor skating starts sooner: public sessions in the EisStadthalle (Halle C) ran from 25 October 2025 to 8 March 2026, and the Eisring Sued has opened as early as 22 October in past seasons.

The Wiener Eistraum is the outlier. It is a temporary build that opened on 22 January 2026 and closed on 8 March 2026, a run of 46 days, one week longer than the previous edition. Plan January and February visits around it; plan November and December visits around the club and municipal rinks.

How much does ice skating in Vienna cost?

Admission clusters around the EUR 9 to EUR 11 mark for adults. For the 2025/26 season, PULS 24 listed the Wiener Eistraum at EUR 9.50 for adults and EUR 6.70 for children in the online shop, the Eisring Sued and the EisStadthalle from EUR 9.50 for adults and EUR 7.50 for under-18s, and the Kunsteisbahn Engelmann from EUR 10 for adults and EUR 8 for youths up to 17.

Two levers cut the bill. Buying online is usually cheaper than the box office: the Eistraum charged EUR 9.50 online against EUR 10.50 at the cash desk. Family and group rates exist at the Wiener Eislauf-Verein, and school classes skate free at the Eistraum from Monday to Friday between 10:00 and 16:00. Skate hire is charged separately at every rink.

Which rink works best for beginners and families?

Space and separation matter more than prestige. The Eistraum splits its ice into seven surfaces, six of them linked by paths, so nervous first-timers can stay off the busy main rink in front of the city hall. From 17:00 the beginners' surface there switches to curling lanes, which shortens skating time in the evening.

The Wiener Eislauf-Verein takes a different approach: 6,000 m2 of contiguous outdoor ice, plus courses for children and adults, a cloakroom, skate hire and a self-service buffet on site. It handles over 250,000 visitors and around 300 school classes a year, so weekday mornings are calmer than weekend afternoons. The EisStadthalle reserves morning slots for schools and kindergartens.

Where can you skate indoors or outside the main season?

Weather-proof skating in Vienna means Halle C of the Wiener Stadthalle, the Eisring Sued or the Steffl Arena in Donaustadt. Halle C is described by its operator as the only ice hall in Austria with year-round training ice; its summer public sessions ran from 10 March 2026 on Tuesdays between 16:00 and 19:45. The Eisring Sued pairs an indoor rink measuring 60 by 30 metres with an outdoor surface that usually opens in early December.

The Steffl Arena, opened in January 1995 and formerly the Albert-Schultz-Eishalle, holds three ice halls of 1,800 m2 each. It is the home venue of the Vienna Capitals, so public sessions work around hockey fixtures.

What do first-time visitors most often get wrong?

Three mistakes recur. First, assuming every rink is open all day: the EisStadthalle closes public skating at 16:45 on most weekdays, and the Eisring Sued indoor sessions can end at 13:00 from Tuesday to Friday. Second, turning up at the Wiener Eislauf-Verein during an event, when the standard daily 09:00 to 20:00 schedule does not apply. Check the rink's own calendar the day before.

Third, ignoring the evening programme. The EisStadthalle runs its ice disco on Saturdays from 16:00 to 19:00, the Eisring Sued on Sundays from 15:30 to 19:00, and the Eistraum stays open until 22:00 daily. Those slots are loud, busy and not ideal for a first lesson.

Which rink has the most history?

The Kunsteisbahn Engelmann wins on record. Eduard Engelmann senior founded the rink in 1868, opened it to paying visitors in 1873, and on 10 November 1909 the site opened the world's first open-air artificial ice rink. The ice surface has measured 3,000 m2 since 1932. Bombing destroyed the plant in 1944/45 and limited operation resumed in 1946.

The Wiener Eislauf-Verein is older as a club, founded in 1867, with a record in ice hockey, figure skating and speed skating. Engelmann sits on a roof above a shopping centre in Hernals, the club rink sits beside the Stadtpark, reachable from the U4 station of the same name.
