Best Museums in Vienna 2026: Ranked, ranked
Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien
The KHM houses counted 1,954,269 visits in 2024, a rise of 15.74 percent, and the main building explains why: Bruegel, Vermeer, Raphael and the Kunstkammer sit under one roof. Adults pay EUR 22 online against EUR 24 at the door, under-19s go free, and Thursday opening until 21:00 buys three calmer hours. The 7 Museums Pass extends to the Imperial Treasury and Weltmuseum Wien for 365 days.
Visitor note (Google Maps) "The Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna should not be missed on any visit to Vienna."
Best for: Old Masters and one big museum day

Belvedere logged 1,867,915 visits in 2024 and holds the largest Klimt group anywhere, with The Kiss at the Upper Belvedere. Adult entry starts at EUR 23, under-19s enter free, and doors open at 09:00, an hour earlier than most rivals. Two Baroque palaces from 1714 to 1723 plus Belvedere 21 mean three separate tickets. The Lampi show runs 13 May to 11 October 2026.
Visitor note (Google Maps) "The wellness area with a swimming pool and sauna was the highlight!"

The Klosterneuburg branch only runs 27 March to 15 November 2026.
Visitor note (Google Maps) "In my opinion, a visit to the Albertina is definitely worth it."
Best for: Drawings, prints and late openings

About 30 million objects, the 29,500-year-old Venus of Willendorf and a full dinosaur hall make this the strongest family pick on the Ring. Official website See full factsWhat does it cost to visit Vienna's main museums in 2026?
Prices cluster in a narrow band. The Kunsthistorisches Museum charges EUR 22 online and EUR 24 at the desk. The Upper Belvedere starts at EUR 23, the Albertina was listed at EUR 19.90, the Leopold Museum at EUR 19, mumok at EUR 18 and the Naturhistorisches Museum at EUR 18. All figures checked 25 September 2026.
Age rules matter more than the headline price. Federal houses admit under-19s free, so a family of two adults and two teenagers pays the adult rate twice at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Belvedere and the Naturhistorisches Museum. The Leopold Museum, a private foundation, is the outlier: it charges EUR 2.50 up to age 19 and offers a family ticket from EUR 21.
Reduced rates run EUR 19 online at the KHM, EUR 14 at the NHM and EUR 11.50 at mumok, usually for students under 27 and visitors aged 65 and over.
Which museum pass or combined ticket actually saves money?
Four options are worth the arithmetic. The Bundesmuseen Card costs EUR 99 and covers the federal museums. The KHM 7 Museums Pass runs 365 days from purchase and includes the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Imperial Treasury, Weltmuseum Wien, the Imperial Carriage Museum, the Collection of Historic Musical Instruments, the Imperial Armoury, the Ephesos Museum and Ambras Castle in Innsbruck.
For the MuseumsQuartier, a joint Leopold Museum and mumok ticket was EUR 33 regular and EUR 29 reduced, falling to EUR 30 and EUR 26 from 4 May 2026. Two separate adult tickets at EUR 19 and EUR 18 come to EUR 37, so the saving is EUR 4 now and EUR 7 later in the year.
The Albertina sells a EUR 50 ticket for its three sites, valid a year, with one entry each. That beats three singles at EUR 19.90 by roughly EUR 10, provided you reach Klosterneuburg between 27 March and 15 November 2026.
When are Vienna's museums quietest?
Late openings are the simplest fix. The Kunsthistorisches Museum stays open to 21:00 on Thursdays, the Albertina until 21:00 on Wednesdays and Fridays, and the Naturhistorisches Museum until 20:00 on Wednesdays. Everywhere else closes at 18:00, with last admission 30 minutes earlier at both Ring museums.
Volume explains the pressure. The KHM houses recorded 1,954,269 visits in 2024 and the Belvedere 1,867,915, so the Klimt room and the picture gallery absorb most of the crowd between 10:30 and 15:00. The Upper Belvedere opens at 09:00, one hour before the Ring museums, which gives an early window nobody else offers.
Closing days spread the load. mumok shuts on Mondays, while the Leopold Museum and the Naturhistorisches Museum shut on Tuesdays. The KHM also opens on Mondays during June, July and August.
How do you plan a two-day museum route in Vienna?
Day one, morning: Upper Belvedere
Book the 09:00 slot and start with the Klimt rooms before the tour groups arrive. Adult entry starts at EUR 23 and under-19s are free. Tram D stops at Schloss Belvedere and the U1 stops at Suedtiroler Platz / Hauptbahnhof, both short walks from the gate. Allow 90 minutes for the Upper Belvedere alone; the Lower Belvedere and Belvedere 21 need separate tickets.
Day one, afternoon: Albertina
Move to Albertinaplatz in the first district. The Albertina opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00 and runs to 21:00 on Wednesdays and Fridays, so a late-afternoon arrival still leaves three hours. A single adult ticket was EUR 19.90 in September 2026 and stays valid for one year from purchase.
Day two, morning: Kunsthistorisches Museum
Give this one three hours minimum. Doors open at 10:00, Tuesday to Sunday, with Monday opening added in June, July and August. Pay EUR 22 online rather than EUR 24 on site. If you are visiting on a Thursday, flip the day and come at 17:00 instead, when the house runs to 21:00.
Day two, afternoon: Naturhistorisches Museum or the MuseumsQuartier
The Naturhistorisches Museum stands about 200 metres away at Burgring 7 and costs EUR 18, free under 19. Halls 29 to 32 were closed for renovation in September 2026. If contemporary art suits better, walk ten minutes to the MuseumsQuartier for the Leopold Museum and mumok on one EUR 33 ticket.
What is worth booking for the 2026 exhibition season?
Three dates anchor the year. The Belvedere shows IN-SIGHT: Johann Baptist Lampi the Elder and the Younger at the Upper Belvedere from 13 May to 11 October 2026. mumok runs Video Control from 20 June 2026 to 7 February 2027. Albertina Klosterneuburg, which opened in 2024, operates only from 27 March to 15 November 2026.
One-off events fill the gaps. On 14 February 2026, the Belvedere photographs couples free of charge in front of The Kiss between 19:00 and 23:00. The Kunsthistorisches Museum extended hours to 21:00 on 19 March 2026 and closed entirely on 4 May 2026.
Check seasonal closures before travelling in winter. The Naturhistorisches Museum closes on 25 December 2026 and shuts at 15:00 on 24 December 2026.
What mistakes do first-time visitors make?
Three errors recur. The first is buying at the counter: the Kunsthistorisches Museum charges EUR 24 on site against EUR 22 online, a EUR 2 penalty per person. The second is ignoring closing days, which strands visitors outside the Leopold Museum and the Naturhistorisches Museum on Tuesdays and outside mumok on Mondays.
The third is underestimating the Belvedere. It is three venues, not one, and each carries its own ticket. Visitors who book an Upper Belvedere entry expecting the Lower Belvedere exhibitions in the Marble Gallery and Orangery end up paying twice.
One more practical point: teenagers travel cheaply here. Under-19s enter the KHM, the Belvedere, the Naturhistorisches Museum and mumok free, and pay EUR 2.50 at the Leopold Museum.
Which alternatives are worth a look beyond the top six?
Two federal houses sit just outside this ranking. The Technisches Museum Wien opened on 6 May 1918 in Penzing and recorded 467,894 visitors in 2024 under director Peter Aufreiter, which makes it the strongest option for families with older children after the Naturhistorisches Museum.
The MAK, Vienna's applied arts museum, is smaller: it drew about 170,000 visitors in 2024, up 1.67 percent on the year before, and 144,655 in 2022. Scale is the trade-off, and so is queueing, since neither house carries the footfall of the Ring museums.
Federal museum attendance overall reached 8,441,175 visits in 2025, against 7,771,555 in 2024 and 7,341,032 in 2023. Demand keeps rising, so book timed entry where it exists.
