Best Ski Resorts in Lower Austria: 7 Areas Ranked
Lower Austria has around 20 small ski areas and none passes 20 piste kilometres. As of September 2026, Hochkar leads on altitude (1,380 m to 1,808 m) and terrain (19 km, nine lifts), Semmering Hirschenkogel on floodlit night skiing (13 of 14 km), and Lackenhof am Ötscher on value through the shared Hochkar-Ötscher pass. Treat all of them as day trips from Vienna, not week-long holidays.
Best Ski Resorts in Lower Austria: 7 Areas Ranked, ranked
Hochkar
The province's highest and biggest area, running 1,380 m to 1,808 m with 19 km of piste (5.5 blue, 10 red, 3.5 black) and nine lifts. That altitude buys a December to April season when Semmering is already closing. It also carries the only serious steep terrain in Lower Austria plus a funpark, and the shared Hochkar-Ötscher ticket adds a second area for 38 km total.
Best for: Longest season and steepest pistes
Official website See full factsSemmering Hirschenkogel
Two lifts only, a gondola and a four-seat chair, but they feed 14 km of piste across roughly 30 hectares, and 13 of those kilometres are floodlit. Grooming happens twice daily and the 2025/26 season ran 4 December to 15 March. The top station reaches about 1,360 m, so snowmaking carries it. Train access to Semmering station plus a winter shuttle makes it the easiest car-free option from Vienna.
Best for: Night skiing and car-free access
Official website See full factsLackenhof am Ötscher
Nineteen kilometres of piste split 7 km blue, 8 km red and 4 km black, with three chairlifts, three drag lifts and two magic carpets. The vertical runs from 810 m in the village to 1,425 m at the Großer Ötscher top station. Families get a dedicated children's area and a funslope; ski tourers get marked piste-touring access during operating hours. The joint Hochkar-Ötscher pass covers both areas on one ticket.
Best for: Mixed-ability groups
See full factsGemeindealpe Mitterbach
A single mountain done properly: 15.5 km of piste, four lifts and a summit at 1,626 m with the Terzerhaus restaurant and a 360 degree view over the Erlaufsee. Adult day tickets were listed at EUR 53 for 2025/26, with the winter season set from 6 December 2025 to 15 March 2026. The area sits inside the Ötscher-Tormäuer nature park, and the base station is at 800 m.
Visitor note (Google Maps) "Absolutely recommended — a must when you're in Mitterbach."
Best for: Long single-mountain descents
Official website See full factsSchischaukel Mönichkirchen-Mariensee
Ten pistes and 13.5 km linked between Mönichkirchen am Wechsel and Mariensee, spanning roughly 870 m to 1,450 m. Three four-seat chairlifts do the heavy lifting, supported by a platter lift and a rope tow for beginners. Full-surface snowmaking with a storage pond is the selling point at this altitude. Terrain splits 5.5 km blue, 6 km red and 2 km black, including a black FIS descent and a 2.2 km valley run.
Best for: Snowmaking-backed family days
See full factsAnnaberger Lifte
Twelve and a half kilometres of piste, of which 8 km are blue, which explains the family reputation. Six lifts include two four-seat chairs, two drag lifts, two platter lifts and a magic carpet, covering 895 m to 1,300 m at the Hennesteck. Holders of the Niederösterreich-CARD get a free day ticket on the chairlift and conveyor. Parking is charged but included with a valid ski ticket.
Best for: Budget family skiing
Official website See full factsFamilienskiland Wexl Arena St. Corona am Wechsel
Not a ski area in the conventional sense: 70,000 square metres of gentle learning terrain at about 840 m, served by two conveyor belts, a button lift and a T-bar. There is a toboggan run, a winter adventure land and a base building of roughly 1,000 square metres. Floodlight operates Friday and Saturday, 16:00 to 19:00. Roughly 60 minutes from Vienna, and the Niederösterreich-CARD includes a free floodlight ticket.
Best for: First-timers and small children

Nothing in Lower Austria competes with Tyrol on scale. The largest single area, Hochkar above Göstling an der Ybbs, offers 19 km of piste served by nine lifts between 1,380 m and 1,808 m. Lackenhof am Ötscher matches the 19 km but starts far lower, at 810 m. Gemeindealpe Mitterbach has 15.5 km and four lifts, topping out at 1,626 m. Semmering Hirschenkogel runs 14 km on roughly 30 hectares with just two lifts, a gondola and a four-seat chair.
Read those numbers as day-trip capacity rather than holiday capacity. A confident skier can cover any of these areas before lunch. What the region sells instead is proximity: Semmering sits about an hour from both Vienna and Graz, and the Wexl Arena at St. Corona am Wechsel is roughly 60 minutes from Vienna.
What does a ski day in Lower Austria cost?
Prices sit well below the western Austrian average, though each area sets its own tariff. Gemeindealpe Mitterbach listed an adult day ticket at EUR 53 for the 2025/26 winter. The Hochkar-Ötscher ticket is the regional value play: one pass covers both areas, 38 km of piste and 17 lifts between 810 m and 1,800 m, which is a rare combination for eastern Austria.
Two further levers cut the cost. The Niederösterreich-CARD includes a free day ticket on the Annaberger Lifte chairlift and conveyor, and a free floodlight ticket at the Wexl Arena family ski area. Lackenhof and Annaberg both charge for parking, but the fee is included for guests holding a valid ski ticket or an Ostalpen-Card. Booking online ahead of a sunny weekend is also cheaper at several areas, with early-bird and online discounts advertised for the Ötscher ticket shop.
When does the season run and how reliable is the snow?
Season length tracks altitude almost exactly. Hochkar, the highest area in the province at 1,380 m to 1,808 m, normally runs from December into April. Lower areas publish much shorter windows: Gemeindealpe Mitterbach scheduled 6 December 2025 to 15 March 2026, and Semmering Hirschenkogel 4 December 2025 to 15 March 2026, both with daily operation into the afternoon.
Snowmaking does the rest of the work. Mönichkirchen-Mariensee has full-surface snowmaking backed by a storage pond after upgrades around the Mariensee panorama lift and the Mönichkirchner Schwaig. Semmering grooms its pistes twice a day and keeps 13 of its 14 km floodlit, a setup built around its World Cup slope. If you want natural snow depth rather than manufactured cover, Hochkar and Gemeindealpe are the two realistic bets.
How should you plan a day trip and avoid the usual mistakes?
Check status before you drive
Check piste and lift status before leaving. Gemeindealpe and Semmering both listed season ends of 15 March 2026, and low-lying areas close earlier in mild winters. Feratel and bergfex publish live open-lift counts for Annaberg, Lackenhof and Hochkar.
Choose on terrain mix, not drive time
Pick the area by ability, not by drive time. Annaberg is 8 of its 12.5 km in blue runs, while Mönichkirchen-Mariensee splits 5.5 km blue, 6 km red and 2 km black across ten pistes.
Book ahead on fair-weather weekends
Book online where required. The Wexl Arena asks guests to book in advance on fair-weather weekends and on Lower Austrian school holidays, and its floodlight runs Friday and Saturday from 16:00 to 19:00.
Sort the transport, including the way back
Plan the return. Semmering is reachable by train to Semmering station plus the winter shuttle, which runs at weekends and during the Christmas and semester holidays; the alternative is the train to Gloggnitz.
Deal with parking on arrival
Register your plate for parking. Lackenhof and Annaberg charge for parking, but the fee is covered by a valid ski ticket, and Ostalpen-Card holders give their number plate once at the ticket desk.
What are the alternatives late in the season?
When the valley thaws, altitude is the only reliable answer inside the province. The gap between the base at St. Corona am Wechsel (about 840 m) and the Hochkar summit (1,808 m) is close to a kilometre of vertical, and that gap shows up in cover from late February onwards. Lackenhof's upper terrain on the Großer Ötscher reaches 1,425 m, which holds better than its 810 m village base.
There are non-downhill fallbacks too. Lackenhof allows piste touring on all open runs during operating hours with a valid touring ticket, and marks an ascent route on the Großer Ötscher from Weitental to the Ötscherschutzhaus. Semmering keeps a 3 km adventure toboggan run open by day and night. Gemeindealpe switches to mountain carts in summer, with its 2026 summer operation listed from 9 May to 1 November.
