Best Ski Areas in Zell am See-Kaprun
Zell am See sells one lift pass, the Ski ALPIN CARD, and it opens four ski areas: the Schmittenhöhe above town, the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, the Maiskogel at Kaprun and the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn. That is 408 km of piste on 121 lifts. In September 2026 the field stops at four, because no other lift company operates in the region, so every qualifying area is ranked here.
Best Ski Areas in Zell am See-Kaprun, ranked
Schmittenhöhe
The Schmittenhöhe holds 77 km of piste split into 30 km blue, 28 km red and 19 km black, served by 27 lifts between 760 m and 2,000 m. Five valley runs and six feeder lifts mean you can start from Zell am See town, Schüttdorf or Viehhofen without a car. The Nightslope is included in a valid ski pass, and the zellamseeXpress links the mountain to the Glemmtal.
Best for: Best all-round base in Zell am See
Official website See full factsKitzsteinhorn
The Kitzsteinhorn tops out at 3,029 m and is planned to run from 10 October 2026 into May 2027, the longest season on the pass. Its signature descent drops 1,051 m over 5 km from the summit to Langwiedboden, and the Black Mamba run reaches a 63 per cent gradient. Skiing starts at Kaprun's 768 m valley floor thanks to the K-ONNECTION gondola chain, so the glacier is reachable without a shuttle bus.
Best for: Best for early and late season snow
Official website See full factsSkicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn
The Skicircus contributes 270 km of the pass total: 140 km blue, 112 km red and 18 km black across 70 lifts and more than 60 huts. Winter 2026/27 operation is planned for 27 November 2026 to 4 April 2027. It sits over the ridge from Zell am See, reached by the zellamseeXpress from Viehhofen, which makes it a day trip rather than a base for anyone sleeping by the lake.
Best for: Best for piste mileage on the same ticket
Official website See full factsMaiskogel
The Maiskogel is Kaprun's home mountain, reached by the 10-seater MK Maiskogelbahn from the village centre in two sections. Its Almbahn valley run measures 7 km with 962 m of vertical, one of the longest easy descents in the region. The 4.3 km 3K K-onnection, opened in November 2019 as Salzburg's first tri-cable gondola, carries skiers on to the glacier, so the area doubles as the gateway to the Kitzsteinhorn.
Best for: Best for families and first weeks on skis

There is no single mountain called Zell am See. The town sits under the Schmittenhöhe, which carries 77 km of piste on 27 lifts between 760 m and 2,000 m. Eight kilometres away in Kaprun, the Kitzsteinhorn glacier runs to 3,029 m, with the family-sized Maiskogel below it. Together the Zell am See and Kaprun mountains hold roughly 138 km of local piste.
The Ski ALPIN CARD adds the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn and its 270 km. That takes the pass total to 408 km of slopes and 121 cable cars and lifts, spread across Salzburg and a slice of Tyrol at Fieberbrunn. Two small extras, the Hinterreit lifts in Maria Alm and the Naglköpfl in Walchen, are also included.
How snow-sure is skiing in Zell am See-Kaprun?
Altitude does the work here, and it is unevenly distributed. The Kitzsteinhorn glacier reaches 3,029 m and is marketed as snow-reliable from October to May; the planned 2026/27 season runs from 10 October 2026 into May 2027. That is roughly six weeks earlier than the Skicircus, which is scheduled for 27 November 2026 to 4 April 2027.
The Schmittenhöhe is the weak link on paper, topping out at 2,000 m with valley runs finishing at 760 m by the lake. In practice it is heavily pisted and connected, but in a warm December or a late-March week the five valley descents are the first terrain to suffer. If you book before mid-December or after Easter, plan on the glacier carrying your week.
How do you move between the three mountains without a car?
Start from the town gondolas
Zell am See town has direct access to the Schmittenhöhe via the cityXpress, the trassXpress, the Schmittenhöhebahn and the Sonnenalmbahn. Schüttdorf, the southern district where much of the cheaper accommodation sits, uses the areitXpress. Six feeder lifts in total serve the mountain, so the choice of base within the town matters less than people assume.
Take the ski bus or train to Kaprun
Kaprun lies 8 km from Zell am See and has its own lift base in the village centre. The MK Maiskogelbahn, a 10-seater gondola, climbs from the centre in two sections. From there the 3K K-onnection continues to the glacier, which means you can ride from the valley floor at 768 m to 3,029 m without changing to a bus part way up.
Use the zellamseeXpress for Saalbach
The zellamseeXpress, opened for the 2019/20 season, links the Schmittenhöhe with the Glemmtal at Viehhofen. That is the ski route to the Skicircus and its 270 km. Budget a full day for it: the crossing is long, and the last connection back over the ridge closes well before the valley lifts do.
What does the Ski ALPIN CARD cost and how is it sold?
Prices change every season, so check the current table before you book. The 2026/27 tariff list on zellamsee-kaprun.com was published on 16 June 2026, and autumn glacier rates for the 10 October 2026 start are listed separately on the Kitzsteinhorn site. Multi-day passes are valid on consecutive days only, a photo is required from eight days upwards, and a day ticket already works from 3 pm the previous afternoon.
Two discounts are worth knowing. The Junior XPLORE CARD gives anyone under 19 (born 2007 to 2019) a 15 euro Saturday day ticket across all three regions. Children born in 2021 or later ski free when accompanied by an adult. Epic Pass holders get five days across the ALPIN CARD resorts, subject to pass type.
What do first-time visitors get wrong here?
Three mistakes recur. The first is booking a March week and expecting the 760 m valley runs into Zell am See to be open; the lake sits low, and the Schmittenhöhe only reaches 2,000 m. The second is treating Saalbach as a casual afternoon hop. Its 270 km lie over a ridge, and the return depends on one lift chain through Viehhofen.
The third is buying accommodation in Kaprun while planning to ski mostly on the Schmittenhöhe, or the reverse. The two bases are 8 km apart with separate lift systems. Pick the mountain you want to ski four days out of six, then book next to its gondola.
When is Zell am See the wrong choice, and what else fits?
If you want a single huge linked circuit and nothing else, base yourself in Saalbach or Leogang and ski the 270 km directly, using Zell am See as the occasional day trip instead. If you want guaranteed October or May snow with minimal travel, Kaprun beats the lakeside every time, because the Kitzsteinhorn lift chain starts in the village at 768 m.
Where Zell am See wins is the mix. A lakeside town of about 10,200 residents, a rail station, a 2,000 m family mountain, a 3,029 m glacier and 408 km on one card is unusual in Austria. The region logged 1,506,871 winter overnight stays in 2025/26, which tells you the beds exist but also that February half-term fills early.
