Best Mountain Restaurants in Ski amadé

As of September 2026, the strongest mountain dining in Ski amadé clusters on the Schladming four-mountain circuit and around Flachau. Krummholzhütte on the Hauser Kaibling (1,857 m) leads on awards, regional sourcing and its year-round rooms. Schafalm on the Planai (about 1,800 m) is a certified Ski amadé ski and wine partner, one of 25 in Salzburg and Styria. Lisa Alm in Flachau (1,520 m) covers the design and clubbing end.

Best Mountain Restaurants in Ski amadé, ranked

1.

Krummholzhütte

4.6 / 5 out of 1296 Google Maps reviews

Highest of the ranked huts at 1,857 m on the Hauser Kaibling, and the only one that sells beds as well as lunch: two, three and four-bed rooms plus a 10-bed dormitory next door, with breakfast buffet, three-course dinner and sauna included. Innkeeper Daniel Mairamhof works with regional produce, and the hut holds Schladming-Dachstein Genusspartner status. It carries the label Austria's 1. Genusshütte and won Europe's most popular ski hut in 2011 and 2013. Open year-round.

Visitor note (Google Maps) "Would gladly come again and to the Krummholzhütte: Thanks and see you soon!"

2.

Schafalm

4.4 / 5 out of 3838 Google Maps reviews

Sits just below the Planai 10-passenger gondola top station at roughly 1,800 m, which makes it the easiest gourmet stop to reach without skis. The kitchen runs wood-fired pizza, Styrian trout and fillet steak from pasture-raised oxen, and the house is a certified Ski amadé Wein-Genusspartner. It also sits in the Planai operators' Genuss-Specht group. Live-music après-ski takes over every Friday and Saturday in winter, so book lunch midweek.

Visitor note (Google Maps) "We were at the Schafalm today listening to music with the Gasteiners."

Best for: Best for wine with the view

3.

Lisa Alm

Directly on a snow space Flachau piste at 1,520 m, in the ski area skiresort.info scores 5 of 5 for gastronomy. The draw is the wine and champagne list plus an après format built on ambient and house music rather than schlager. The whole venue can be hired for company parties, weddings and birthdays, and it trades all year, not only in winter. Lowest altitude in this ranking, so spring snow around the terrace softens early.

Best for: Best for a design lunch and afternoon DJ sets

4.

Hochalm

4.7 / 5 out of 21 Google Maps reviews

Built with timber salvaged from old Pongau farmhouses and placed centrally in the Reiteralm sector, the western of Schladming's four mountains. That position makes it the natural lunch stop on a day that runs Reiteralm to Hochwurzen to Planai. Skiresort.info puts the Schladming 4-Berge-Skischaukel at the top of its Austrian Alps gastronomy ranking, checked in September 2026. Less documented certification than the two Schladming leaders, hence the score.

Visitor note (Google Maps) "Friendly and courteous staff, who were always helpful."

Best for: Best for old-timber atmosphere

5.

Hirsch und Maus

Opened for the 2025/26 season on the Schlossalm above Bad Hofgastein and named after the Hirschkar and Mauskar peaks. The menu pairs regional classics with modern versions, and the sun terrace faces the Gastein valley walls. It adds to a valley that already runs the Gasteiner Skihauben scheme, where selected huts cook a dish to recipes and training from award-winning Salzburg chefs. Too new for a settled guide rating, which caps the score for now.

Best for: Best new opening in Gastein

6.

Der Almstadl

Stands at 1,666 m right beside the Flying Mozart piste, one of the main connecting runs inside Snow Space Salzburg. That location suits skiers crossing the 210 km Panorama Link who need food without a detour. It appears in the Snow Space Salzburg mountain restaurant guide and stays open in summer as a walking stop. No published certification or guide rating, so it ranks on access and altitude rather than kitchen credentials.

Best for: Best quick stop on the Wagrain to Flachau link

What makes a mountain restaurant in Ski amadé stand out?

Ski amadé does not hand out stars, it certifies. The network built its ski and wine criteria together with Austrian Wine Marketing, and a hut qualifies only if it carries a broad Austrian wine selection, cooks regional dishes from local products and holds a service standard. Certified houses show a badge at the entrance, and 25 establishments across Salzburg and Styria held that status when we checked in September 2026. That is the single most useful filter on the mountain, because it is the only label applied consistently across all five member regions.

Individual regions add their own layers. On the Planai, restaurant operators run the Genuss-Specht label for local sourcing. In Gastein, selected huts cook a dish under the Gasteiner Skihauben banner using recipes and training from award-winning Salzburg chefs. In Schladming-Dachstein, houses such as Krummholzhütte hold Genusspartner status, which involves regular origin checks on the food. Stack those three signals together and the shortlist gets short fast.

Which Ski amadé ski area has the best hut dining?

By independent scoring, Snow Space Salzburg (Flachau, Wagrain and St. Johann-Alpendorf) tops the network: skiresort.info rates its gastronomy 5 out of 5 and places it first in its Ski amadé list, with Ramsau am Dachstein Rittisberg and Filzmoos on 4 out of 5, checked September 2026. Volume helps here. Flachau alone counts 35 km of pistes served by 20 cable cars and lifts, and the Panorama Link ties Snow Space Salzburg, Shuttleberg Flachauwinkl-Kleinarl and Zauchensee into 210 km of pistes, so a hut tour can cross three areas in one day.

For individual addresses rather than area averages, Schladming still wins. The 4-Berge-Skischaukel (Planai, Hochwurzen, Hauser Kaibling and Reiteralm) heads the skiresort.info Austrian Alps gastronomy ranking, and it holds the two strongest single houses in this guide, at roughly 1,800 m and 1,857 m. Restaurants are spread over all four mountains, so the next stop is rarely more than a run away, and each mountain also keeps a self-service option for fast lunches.

How do you plan a hut day without losing ski time?

  1. Check the opening dates before you go

Mountain restaurants in Ski amadé do not all run the same calendar. Planai-Hochwurzen-Bahnen publishes per-hut times on planai.at, and the spread is wide: Hochwurzenhütte lists 14.05.2026 to 11.10.2026 for summer operation, while Wieslechalm shows 26.06.2026 to 06.09.2026. Winter dates follow the lift season instead, so a hut that is open in August may be shut in late April. Check the individual page rather than the area page.

  2. Reserve a table at the flagship houses

The certified and awarded addresses fill first. Krummholzhütte at 1,857 m also runs an accommodation business, so its dining room takes house guests as well as passing skiers. Lisa Alm can be booked out entirely for private events, which means a walk-in at 12:30 is a gamble on party dates. Phone ahead the day before for both.

  3. Match the altitude to the month

In March and April, terraces at 1,520 m (Lisa Alm) soften and slush earlier in the afternoon than terraces at 1,800 to 1,857 m on the Planai and Hauser Kaibling. Early season, the reverse applies: lower huts are usually easier to ski to on limited snow cover. Plan the long lunch for the altitude that suits the date.

  4. Decide whether you want the party or not

Schafalm turns into a live-music après-ski venue every Friday and Saturday in winter, and Lisa Alm runs afternoon club sets with ambient and house music. If you want a quiet two-hour lunch, go midweek or pick Hochalm on the Reiteralm instead. If you want the party, plan the last descent accordingly and do not ski after drinking.

Can you eat dinner or sleep up on the mountain?

Yes, though the options are narrow. Krummholzhütte is the clearest case: it stays open year-round at 1,857 m on the Hauser Kaibling and rents two, three and four-bed rooms, plus a 10-bed dormitory in a neighbouring hut. The rate covers a breakfast buffet, a three-course dinner and use of the sauna, and the Zirbenstube parlour works for evening meals. That turns a ski day into a night above the Enns valley without a transfer back down to Haus im Ennstal or Schladming.

Events are the other route to an evening on the mountain. Lisa Alm at 1,520 m in Flachau is rented out exclusively for company parties, weddings and birthdays across the whole year, not only in the ski season. Down the road in Zauchensee, the Arena-Alm hosts company ski race prize-givings and Christmas parties, with the Arena bar and its large sun terrace opening at lunchtime. Both require advance arrangement with the operator, including any snowcat or lift transport after the public lifts stop.

What do visitors most often get wrong?

The biggest error is a map error. Obertauern is not part of Ski amadé, so the fine-dining room at Das Seekarhaus (around 1,800 m, three Gault&Millau toques for chef Stefan Fischer) is not reachable on a Ski amadé ticket. Ski amadé covers Salzburger Sportwelt, Schladming-Dachstein, Gastein, Hochkönig and Grossarltal. Anything outside those five regions needs a separate lift pass, however close it looks on a road map.

The second mistake is treating old awards as current ratings. Krummholzhütte's Europe's most popular ski hut titles date from 2011 and 2013, and the Austria's 1. Genusshütte label is a designation, not an annual score. The third is assuming every hut does table service. All four Schladming mountains keep self-service restaurants alongside the alpine-style huts, which is useful when you have 40 minutes, less so when you booked the day around a long lunch. Check the format before you take off your boots.

Which alternatives work when the top huts are full?

Inside the network, Zauchensee and Flachauwinkl hold the easiest fallbacks. Arena-Alm in the World Cup Arena Zauchensee is a table-service house whose lunchtime service expands into the Arena bar with a large sun terrace. Bodenalm in the same sector can be reached by non-skiers riding the Highliner I lift, which matters for mixed groups. In Flachau, Birkhahnalm sits next to the Achterjet top station and runs a stated concept of sustainability and quality alongside tradition.

Outside Ski amadé, Obertauern is the nearest serious alternative and needs its own ticket. Its dining spread runs from rustic huts to upscale rooms: Treff 2000 offers table service with scampi, spare ribs, beef fillet and an Alm fondue, while Das Seekarhaus serves a six-course fine-dining menu and keeps a Beatles Bar for cocktails and bar food. The hotel has also opened in summer since 2025. Budget a second lift pass if you want both regions in one week.
