Best Time to Ski in Austria: Month-by-Month Guide
As of September 2026, the answer splits three ways. Glaciers such as Stubai (9 October 2026) and Kitzsteinhorn (10 October 2026) carry October and November. Full lift networks run from early December, with peak pricing over Christmas and the February holidays. For terrain plus value, mid-January and the second half of March work best; Easter falls on 28 March 2027, so spring weeks are early.
When does the Austrian ski season actually start?
The first lifts in Austria are glacier lifts. The Mölltaler Glacier in Carinthia is listed to start on 3 October 2026, the Stubai Glacier gives 9 October 2026 on its own site, and the Kitzsteinhorn above Kaprun plans 10 October 2026 for a winter season running into May 2027. The Hintertux Glacier opens the freestyle calendar with its Park Opening from 2 to 4 October 2026, the 22nd edition of that event.
Valley resorts follow six to eight weeks later. Published 2026/27 starts include Obergurgl-Hochgurgl on 19 November (World Cup races on 21 and 22 November), Obertauern on 20 November, Ischgl on 26 November, Saalbach-Hinterglemm and Silvretta Montafon on 27 November, St. Anton am Arlberg on 2 December and Planai in Schladming on 4 December 2026. The national tourist board notes that most areas open between late November and mid-December, and that snow can move any of these dates.
Which weeks are peak season and which are cheap?
Resorts publish their own price calendars, and those calendars are the clearest map of demand. Sölden splits winter 2026/27 into blocks: 5 to 18 December 2026, 7 to 29 January 2027 and 27 February to 18 April 2027 are sold as main-season windows. The gaps between them, 19 December to 6 January and 30 January to 26 February, are the Christmas and holiday-season weeks that are priced and booked separately.
Season calendars for 2026/27 point to early January after New Year, late January and the second half of March as the value windows, with accommodation reported at 30 to 50 percent below peak rates. Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027, which pulls family demand into late March rather than April. Book the last two weeks of April if you want empty pistes and the lowest published rates.
What does January give you that November or early December cannot?
Coverage. In October and November only part of a mountain runs, and Austrian resorts describe this openly as partial operation or weekend operation rather than continuous operation. A November trip to Sölden or Kaprun means glacier terrain above roughly 2,800 m, not the 145.7 km of piste and 31 lifts that Sölden counts when the whole area is open between 1,350 and 3,340 m.
By the second week of January every major Austrian area is running its full network, tree-line runs at 1,200 to 1,600 m are open, and ski schools have their full timetable. That is why the 7 to 29 January 2027 block appears in Sölden's main-season pricing while still sitting outside the Christmas peak. For most intermediate skiers, that window is the best trade between open terrain and cost.
How late in the spring can you still ski in Austria?
Later than most people assume, but only at altitude. Published 2026/27 closing dates put Kitzbühel and Saalbach-Hinterglemm at 4 April 2027, Silvretta Montafon at 11 April, St. Anton am Arlberg and Obergurgl-Hochgurgl at 18 April, and Ischgl and Obertauern at 2 May 2027. Sölden lists a separate spring period from 19 April to 2 May 2027.
The glaciers run longest. The Mölltaler Glacier is listed to 30 May 2027, the Kitzsteinhorn plans ski operations into May 2027, and the Stubai Glacier ran 10 October 2025 to 17 May 2026 last season. Hintertux is the outlier: its lifts are scheduled 365 days a year, snow permitting. Expect firm snow early and slush by early afternoon, so start at first lift.
How do you pick the right week for your trip?
Fix the immovable dates first
Work backwards from school holidays and Easter. Easter Sunday falls on 28 March 2027, so the spring family rush lands in late March and April empties earlier than in years when Easter is in mid-April. If you are free in term time, target the first three weeks of January or the week after 15 March.
Match the month to an altitude
For October, November or late April, only pick areas with lift-served terrain above 3,000 m: Stubai Glacier tops out at 3,212 m at the Wildspitz lift, Sölden reaches 3,340 m, and the Kitzsteinhorn runs to 3,029 m. For December to March, valley-based areas between 1,300 and 2,500 m are open and cheaper.
Read the resort's own price calendar
Do not trust generic high or low season labels. Sölden's 2026/27 pass calendar names three main-season blocks (5 to 18 December, 7 to 29 January, 27 February to 18 April) and prices the Christmas and February weeks outside them. Most large Austrian areas publish the same kind of block calendar before September.
Check what is actually open before you pay
Austria's tourist board warns that weather can shift opening dates at short notice and advises checking the lift company's own site. Resort pages publish live lists of open lifts and pistes: the Stubai Glacier runs 14 lifts on the glacier, and in October that rarely means all 14. Verify two weeks out and again 48 hours before travel.
Sort access and extras
Autumn and spring trips have practical catches. The Ötztal Glacier Road from Sölden to the Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glaciers is toll-free with a valid ski pass, but its status changes daily in bad weather. In Kaprun, the 3K Connection gondola links the village to the glacier. Multi-area passes such as the Ötztal Superskipass start at three days.
What timing mistakes cost skiers the most?
Three recur. First, booking a low valley resort in November: most Austrian areas do not open until 19 November at the earliest and many wait until 2 to 4 December 2026. Second, assuming a glacier ticket means a full mountain. In October the Kitzsteinhorn and Stubai Glacier sell ski access to glacier terrain only, with valley runs closed.
Third, treating a region as one season. In Zell am See-Kaprun the Schmitten side closed on 6 April 2026 while the Kitzsteinhorn glacier kept running into May. Check the individual lift company, not the destination brand. One more: April pass prices drop, but so do operating hours and open piste counts, so a cheap late-season day can be a short one.
Which options rank highest?
Hintertux Glacier
The only Austrian area scheduled to run lifts 365 days a year, snow permitting, from a high point of 3,250 m at the head of the Tux valley. Tyrol's tourist board listed the last season as 27 September 2025 to 19 July 2026. Its Park Opening on 2 to 4 October 2026 is the 22nd edition and opens Europe's freestyle calendar. Pick it for October, November and late-spring trips, not for a 200 km piste network.
Best for: October and July turns

Austria's largest glacier ski area, with 14 lifts on the glacier and a top lift station at 3,212 m. The 2026/27 season is scheduled to start on 9 October 2026, and the previous season ran to 17 May 2026. It sits about 50 minutes from Innsbruck with a free ski bus, and 2025/26 day tickets started at EUR 49. The obvious pick if you want an October or May week with a short transfer.
Best for: Autumn and May skiing near Innsbruck

Two glaciers plus a full resort: 145.7 km of piste, 8.4 km of ski routes and 31 lifts between 1,350 and 3,340 m. The Alpine World Cup opener returns to the Rettenbach glacier on 24 and 25 October 2026, and the resort lists a spring period to 2 May 2027. Its published main-season blocks (5 to 18 December, 7 to 29 January, 27 February to 18 April) make budget planning straightforward.
Best for: Full-size terrain in shoulder months

Salzburg's glacier ski area above Kaprun, topping out at 3,029 m, with a planned 2026/27 winter season from 10 October 2026 into May 2027. Ski operations last season were scheduled through 25 May 2026. The Ski ALPIN CARD links it with Maiskogel, Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See and Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, so a late-October glacier trip can extend into full resort skiing from late November.
Best for: Autumn starts with a valley base
