Best Austrian Ski Resorts for Christmas
As of September 2026, the most snow-reliable Austrian resorts for Christmas week are the high-altitude ones. Hintertux Glacier skis 365 days a year at up to 3,250 m, Obergurgl-Hochgurgl runs 112.2 km of piste between 1,793 m and 3,030 m from mid-November, and Ischgl keeps 90 percent of its slopes above 2,000 m. Obertauern, Ski Arlberg and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis complete the ranking.
Best Austrian Ski Resorts for Christmas, ranked
Hintertux Glacier
The only Austrian area skiable 365 days a year, topping out near 3,250 m, so Christmas conditions never hinge on an early snowfall. The 12 km descent from the Gefrorene Wand to Hintertux is the longest run in the Zillertal. Adult day passes were listed at EUR 49 to EUR 58. From 4 December 2026 the pass also covers Eggalm, Rastkogel, Penken and Ahorn, which widens a one-glacier trip considerably.
Best for: Guaranteed snow on 25 December
Official website See full factsObergurgl-Hochgurgl
A valley floor at 1,793 m and a top station at 3,030 m explain the mid-November opening, four to six weeks before most Tyrolean valley resorts. There are 112.2 km of piste, 4.5 km of ski routes and 25 lifts, with the Top Express gondola joining Obergurgl and Hochgurgl. Thirteen huts and twelve restaurants sit on the mountain. The season runs into early May.
Visitor note (Google Maps) "Bright sunshine and only 3 lifts are running in Obergurgl."
Best for: High-altitude piste skiing without a glacier pass
See full factsObertauern
The ski area spans 1,630 m to 2,313 m with 100 km of piste and 26 lifts, among them one cable car, 19 chairlifts and six T-bars. Its pass position makes it one of the most snow-reliable non-glacier areas in Salzburg, with seasons that regularly start in November and ran to 30 April in 2026. Adult day tickets for 2026/27 are listed between EUR 19 and EUR 72.
Best for: Ski-in ski-out village in a snow trap
Official website See full factsSilvretta Arena Ischgl/Samnaun
More than 239 km of slopes straddle Tyrol and Samnaun in Switzerland, and around 90 percent of them lie above 2,000 m, which is why the area trades on snow certainty from late November to early May. The Silvretta Ski Pass covers 75 lifts once Galtur, Kappl and See are included, with 46 in Ischgl/Samnaun alone. Children under 8 travel free with a parent.
Best for: Big mileage plus Christmas nightlife
Official website See full factsSki Arlberg
Austria's largest linked ski area covers roughly 305 km of slopes across the Vorarlberg and Tyrol sides of the Arlberg, Lech and Zürs included. Iglu Ski's early-season analysis rates Lech and Zürs as having the best December snowfall of any Austrian resort. A Christmas week rarely repeats the same run here, though the lower village bases lean on snowmaking more than the glacier options do.
Best for: Heaviest December snowfall record
Official website See full factsSerfaus-Fiss-Ladis
Three linked villages on a Tyrolean sun terrace share 89 slopes and 68 lifts, with the 2026/27 season estimated from 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027. Christmas sits inside the high season block of 19 December 2026 to 12 March 2027. Children born in 2021 or later ski free, the 2012 to 2020 birth years pay the child rate, and a local guest card reduces the pass price further.
Visitor note (Google Maps) "But Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis ranks among the cream of the crop in terms of infrastructure."
Best for: Families with small children
Official website See full factsWhich Austrian ski areas are the safest bet for snow at Christmas?
Altitude does most of the work in late December. Hintertux Glacier is the only Austrian area open every day of the year, with skiing at around 3,250 m, so Christmas week never depends on a good early-winter snowfall. Obergurgl-Hochgurgl sits between 1,793 m and 3,030 m and runs from mid-November to early May, with 112.2 km of piste plus 4.5 km of marked ski routes served by 25 lifts.
The Silvretta Arena around Ischgl keeps roughly 90 percent of its slopes above 2,000 m and opens at the end of November. Obertauern is lower, 1,630 m to 2,313 m, but its position on the Radstadter Tauern pass catches heavy snowfall and the season normally runs from the start of November to the start of May across 100 km of piste and 26 lifts.
What does a lift pass cost over the Christmas holidays?
Christmas falls inside every Austrian resort's high season, so the peak tariff applies. Obertauern lists adult day passes from about EUR 19 up to EUR 72 for the 2026/27 season, the top rate being the one you pay in late December. Hintertux Glacier adult day passes were quoted at EUR 49 to EUR 58 depending on date and advance purchase. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis sets its high season from 19 December 2026 to 12 March 2027, with a second peak block from 20 to 29 March 2027.
Family rules move the total more than the headline price. At Ischgl, children under 8 accompanied by a parent travel free on the Silvretta Ski Pass. In Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, children born in 2021 or later ski free, those born between 2012 and 2020 pay the child rate, and 2008 to 2011 birth years pay the youth rate. Guests holding the local guest card pay a reduced pass rate there.
How do I choose between a glacier, a high valley resort and a big linked area?
Start with your tolerance for a bad snow year
If a green Christmas would ruin the trip, book glacier terrain. Hintertux Glacier operates all year at up to 3,250 m and holds the 12 km run from the Gefrorene Wand down to Hintertux, the longest piste in the Zillertal. The trade-off is that the wider Ski- und Gletscherwelt Zillertal 3000 pass only adds Eggalm, Rastkogel, Penken and Ahorn from 4 December 2026, so December visitors get the combined area but late-autumn visitors do not.
Check the base altitude, not just the summit
A high top station is useless if the runs home melt out. Obergurgl-Hochgurgl has a valley floor at 1,793 m, which is why the season starts in mid-November. Obertauern's lowest point is 1,630 m and the valley run there is open in practice for most of the season. Compare that with resorts whose villages sit below 1,000 m, where December skiing often means riding lifts down.
Match the terrain size to the length of the trip
A seven-night Christmas stay justifies a larger area. The Silvretta Arena offers more than 239 km of slopes across Tyrol and Samnaun in Switzerland, and the Silvretta Ski Pass covers 75 lifts once Galtur, Kappl and See are added. Ski Arlberg runs to about 305 km. Obergurgl-Hochgurgl's 112.2 km and Obertauern's 100 km suit shorter stays or skiers who prefer repeat laps over transfers.
Add the non-ski half of the group
Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis lists 89 slopes and 68 lifts on a sunny Tyrolean plateau, with a season estimated to run 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027 and a children-free rule from the 2021 birth year. Obergurgl-Hochgurgl counts 13 mountain huts and 12 restaurants for non-skiers meeting the group at lunch. Hintertux has the Betterpark and a Funslope at Sommerbergalm for teenagers.
When do the resorts open and when should I buy the pass?
Opening dates cluster in three waves. Hintertux Glacier runs continuously, and its 2025/26 winter operation was listed from 14 September 2025. Obergurgl-Hochgurgl opens in mid-November, Obertauern from the start of November, and Ischgl at the end of November. Valley areas follow in early December: the Zillertal 3000 combination is valid from 4 December 2026, and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is estimated to start on 4 December 2026.
Buying early matters mostly for season passes and accommodation rather than day tickets. Silvrettaseilbahn AG puts season and annual passes on sale at the Silvrettabahn A1 counters from Monday 16 November 2026, 08:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:00. Resort operators also state that prices can change daily, particularly during events, so a quoted Christmas rate is not fixed until the ticket is issued.
What mistakes do people make when booking Christmas skiing in Austria?
The first is assuming every lift spins on 24 December. Ischgl's operator warns that weather-related closures and limited skiing are to be expected in particular at the start and end of the winter season, and no price reduction applies for closed lifts in Galtur, Kappl and See during the off-season. The second is buying a glacier pass and expecting valley terrain: at Hintertux the extended pass only includes Eggalm, Rastkogel, Penken and Ahorn between 4 December 2026 and 11 April 2027.
The third is ignoring pass extensions that are already paid for. An Obertauern pass of 1.5 days or longer also covers Grosseck-Speiereck in Mauterndorf, about 15 km away, and the LUNGO pass adds Fanningberg and Katschberg. The fourth is booking accommodation before checking whether the guest card, which cuts the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis pass price, comes with the property.
What are the alternatives if the high-altitude resorts are full?
Two routes exist. The first is to stay on a big pass but sleep in a satellite village: the Silvretta Ski Pass reaches 75 lifts across Ischgl/Samnaun, Galtur, Kappl and See, and the Zillertal 3000 pass links Hintertux with Finkenberg and Mayrhofen from 4 December 2026. Obertauern holders can also ski Grosseck-Speiereck, 15 km down the road.
The second is to drop the ambition and stay east. Hochkar, the highest resort in the Lower Austrian Prealps, is described by the national tourist board as reliably snow-covered from December to early April. Krippenstein in Upper Austria has 30 km of marked off-piste routes and a 9 km valley run, one of the longest in the state. Both are within a comfortable drive of Vienna and Linz for a short Christmas break.
