Obertauern vs Flachau: Which Is Better?
As of September 2026, the split is clear. Obertauern wins on snow reliability: all 100 km of piste sit between 1,630 m and 2,313 m, and the 2025/26 season ran 21 November to 3 May. Flachau wins on scale: one ticket covers Snow Space Salzburg (120 km, 45 lifts) plus the whole Ski amadé network (760 km, 270 lifts). Choose altitude or choose size.

Which resort is more snow-sure?
Obertauern, on altitude alone. The village sits at 1,740 m and the pistes run from 1,630 m to 2,313 m, so the lowest lift base in the ski area is still higher than the top station of many Austrian family resorts. The 2025/26 season ran from 21 November 2025 to 3 May 2026, roughly five and a half months. The regional tourist board calls the resort the snow bowl of Austria and quotes conditions from late November to early May.
Flachau plays a different game. Its ski area spans 740 m to 1,980 m, so the valley runs are far lower, and the operator's claim is snow guaranteed from December onwards using high-performance snowmaking rather than raw altitude. In practice that means Flachau is reliable in the core January to March window, while Obertauern is the safer bet for late November, early December and April bookings.
Which is better for families, beginners and intermediates?
Obertauern has the friendlier piste mix on paper: of its 100 km, 61 km are graded blue, 35 km red and only 4 km black. The layout helps too, because the slopes radiate around the village like spokes of a wheel, and the Tauernrunde circuit can be skied clockwise or anticlockwise, so a mixed-ability group keeps meeting at the same lifts.
Flachau's advantage is progression room. Once the group outgrows the local pistes (roughly 56 km around the village), the same ticket opens 210 km and 70 lifts via the Shuttleberg Flachauwinkl-Kleinarl and Zauchensee connections, then 760 km across Ski amadé. The Panorama Link gondola between Grießenkar and the Shuttleberg makes that link skiable in a day. Snow Space Salzburg also counts more than 85 huts and mountain restaurants, which matters with small children and short attention spans.
What do lift passes cost and which pass covers more ground?
Obertauern sells its own pass. The lift companies' fare conditions state that every ticket from 1.5 days is valid in Obertauern and in the Speiereck ski area at Mauterndorf and St. Michael, and also covers night skiing. Passes sit on reusable KeyCards with a EUR 2 deposit. The Obertauern Winter Card covers 15 days between 15 December 2025 and 15 April 2026. Aggregator SNO listed adult six-day prices in a EUR 199 to EUR 235 band (checked 15 September 2026); confirm the 2026/27 table on ski-obertauern.at before booking.
A Flachau day ticket is effectively a Ski amadé ticket, covering 25 resorts, 270 lifts and 760 km of piste. Ski amadé runs an online early-booking bonus, and Flachau's ticket shop adds an optional cancellation guarantee at EUR 2.50 per ticket per day, refundable up to two days before expiry (checked 15 September 2026).
Which one fits your travel plan and your evenings?
Obertauern is the higher, tighter option. The nearest airport is Salzburg and the nearest railway station is Radstadt, and once you are in the village you reach a lift within minutes, which removes the need for a car during the week. Snow-Forecast lists 32 restaurants and 30 bars. The Ski Opening Week from 27 November to 8 December 2026 turns the resort into a concert venue, with Die Fantastischen Vier and Anastacia on the 2026 bill.
Flachau is the event and motorway resort. The Audi FIS Ski World Cup Ladies night slalom runs on 13 January 2026 at Hermann-Maier-Platz in the village centre, under floodlights, with an accompanying Ö3 concert. If you want race-week atmosphere, a bigger village footprint and more restaurant choice at valley level, Flachau reads better. If you want to walk home from the lift in ski boots in April, Obertauern does.
What do people get wrong when comparing the two?
Three traps. First, the 210 km headline for Flachau is the connected total, including Shuttleberg Flachauwinkl-Kleinarl and Zauchensee. Flachau's own slopes are around 56 km, and Snow Space Salzburg on its own lists 120 km with 45 lifts, so budget travel time if you plan to ski the far end of the network.
Second, Obertauern's summit figure is quoted two ways. The Lungau tourist board says slopes reach 2,526 m, while the skiresort.info registry lists the area between 1,630 m and 2,313 m. Use the registry number when you compare resorts, since it is measured the same way everywhere.
Third, people assume a high village means a hard ski area. Obertauern is 61 per cent blue by distance and only 4 km black, so altitude here buys snow, not difficulty.
What are the alternatives if neither fits?
If you like the Flachau model but want steeper terrain, Zauchensee-Flachauwinkl is already on the same ticket and hosts World Cup downhill racing, so you can base in Flachau and ski it on a day trip. Wagrain and St. Johann-Alpendorf are the other two Snow Space Salzburg villages inside the 120 km, 45-lift area, and they usually price lower in accommodation terms than Flachau during race week.
If altitude is the priority but 100 km feels small, the wider Ski amadé network (760 km, 270 lifts, 25 resorts) or Salzburg's larger single areas are the logical step up. Obertauern's own pass extension to the Speiereck ski area at Mauterndorf and St. Michael, included from 1.5 days, is the cheapest way to add variety without changing base.
Which options rank highest?
Obertauern
All skiing sits between 1,630 m and 2,313 m from a village at 1,740 m, which is why the 2025/26 season ran 21 November to 3 May. The piste split is gentle: 61 km blue, 35 km red, 4 km black across 100 km served by 26 lifts. Passes from 1.5 days add the Speiereck ski area and night skiing. The trade-off is scale, since 100 km is half of Flachau's connected network.
Best for: Early and late-season snow reliability

Flachau's ticket is a Ski amadé ticket: 120 km and 45 lifts in Snow Space Salzburg, 210 km and 70 lifts once the Shuttleberg and Zauchensee links are counted, and 760 km across 270 lifts network-wide. The Panorama Link gondola joins Grießenkar to the Shuttleberg. The ski area runs 740 m to 1,980 m, so it leans on snowmaking, and the flagship date is the World Cup night slalom on 13 January 2026.
