Schladming vs Skicircus Saalbach: Which Is Better?
As of September 2026, Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn is the bigger area: 270 km of pistes and 69 lifts between 830 and 2,096 m, against 123 km and 47 lifts between 728 and 2,015 m in Schladming's 4-Berge-Skischaukel. Choose Saalbach for sheer mileage and circuit skiing. Choose Schladming for a compact four-mountain layout, floodlit night skiing and the wider Ski amade multi-day network.

Which area gives you more terrain for a week's holiday?
Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn is roughly twice the size. It counts 270 km of pistes served by 69 lifts, while the Schladming 4-Berge-Skischaukel lists 123 km of pistes plus 4 km of marked ski routes on 47 lifts. The Skicircus reached that scale in stages: Saalbach, Hinterglemm and Leogang were already linked, and Fieberbrunn in Tyrol joined for the 2015/16 season.
The layout differs as much as the mileage. Saalbach is built around a single valley, so you can ski a full loop: the signposted Challenge circuit runs about 65 km over 32 lifts with 12,400 vertical metres, a day out that takes around six hours without breaks. Schladming instead strings four separate mountains, Hauser Kaibling, Planai, Hochwurzen and Reiteralm, along the Enns valley, with the longest single descent measured at 7.7 km.
For a seven-day trip with no repeats, Saalbach wins on volume. For a three or four day stay where you want each mountain skied properly, 123 km is enough.
Which lift pass covers more, Ski amade or the Ski ALPIN CARD?
This is where Schladming claws back ground. A Schladming day ticket is valid across the wider Schladming-Dachstein region, quoted at 176 km of slopes and 69 lifts including the smaller family areas around Ramsau. Tickets valid for more than one day open up the whole Ski amade network, listed at 760 km of slopes and 270 lifts, so a six-day pass can be spread over several valleys in Salzburg and Styria.
In Saalbach the equivalent is the Ski ALPIN CARD, which merges the Skicircus with the Schmittenhohe in Zell am See and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier in Kaprun: 408 km of pistes and up to 121 lifts on one ticket, valid from day one rather than only on multi-day products. Keycard deposits are small but differ: EUR 2.00 in Saalbach and EUR 3.00 on the Schladming side, both checked on 15 September 2026.
Published day and multi-day rates change by season and booking date, so take the price from the operator shop on the day you buy.
Which is better for families and beginners?
Schladming is the easier base for a first ski holiday. The four-mountain area runs dedicated children's zones with practice slopes and ski school instruction, and runs finish close to the town centre rather than high above it. Ski amade discounts children and teenagers every Saturday and Sunday, and the day ticket also covers the gentler Schladming-Dachstein satellites such as Fageralm, Galsterberg and Ski Rittisberg inside the same 176 km figure.
Saalbach answers with hard cash. On Saturdays the day ticket for kids born between 2008 and 2020 is EUR 15.00, and children born in 2011 or later ski free when an adult buys a four-day pass (the SuperSkiCard is excluded). Both offers were listed on saalbach.com on 15 September 2026.
The trade-off is scale: a 270 km circuit means longer transfers back to your village if a child tires, whereas Schladming's mountains each have their own valley station.
Which is better for advanced skiers, racers and night skiing?
Saalbach has the stronger competition record. It staged the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships from 4 to 16 February 2025, with 11 events and the Skicircus as main venue, 34 years after the 1991 championships in the same valley. Fieberbrunn adds the freeride terrain that the Glemmtal side lacks, which is the main reason the 2015/16 link mattered to expert skiers.
Schladming's card is the Planai. The Nightrace, the FIS men's floodlit slalom, has been run there since the late 1990s, and a night giant slalom was added in 2023; the 2026 edition filled two evenings, 27 and 28 January. Recreational night skiing runs on a floodlit piste on the Hochwurzen, which is closed to evening skiers on race nights.
On altitude the two are close: 728 m to 2,015 m in Schladming, 830 m to 2,096 m in Saalbach. Neither has glacier terrain in the linked area; the Dachstein Glacier near Schladming is a separate lift system.
How should you choose between Schladming and Saalbach?
Count the days you will actually ski
Two or three ski days rarely justify 270 km. In that case the 123 km of the Schladming 4-Berge-Skischaukel, plus the 176 km covered by the day ticket across Schladming-Dachstein, is more than most people cover. From five days upward the Skicircus and its 69 lifts start to pay off, because you can ride the 65 km Challenge circuit and still have unskied terrain left.
Match the pass to your itinerary
If you plan to move between valleys, a multi-day Ski amade ticket from Schladming unlocks 760 km and 270 lifts across Salzburg and Styria. If you want glacier insurance in a thin snow year, the Ski ALPIN CARD from Saalbach adds the Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun and the Schmittenhohe in Zell am See for a combined 408 km. Check both prices on the operator shop before booking, since rates move with season and demand.
Avoid the two common mistakes
First, do not assume Schladming means one mountain: Hauser Kaibling, Planai, Hochwurzen and Reiteralm are four linked mountains with a 7.7 km longest run, and beds in Haus or Rohrmoos put you on a different one. Second, do not assume the whole Skicircus is ski-in from your hotel. Fieberbrunn sits in Tyrol at the far end of the 270 km network, so the return leg needs an eye on lift closing times.
Consider the alternatives before committing
If night skiing and race atmosphere are the draw, the Planai hosts the Nightrace each January (27 and 28 January in 2026). If it is raw size, other Austrian links compete: the Ski ALPIN CARD network itself reaches 408 km and up to 121 lifts, and the Ski amade alliance reaches 760 km. Compare those network figures, not just the 270 km versus 123 km headline, when the goal is variety over a week.

Fieberbrunn, linked since 2015/16, adds the freeride terrain. Ski ALPIN CARD tickets extend to Zell am See and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier for 408 km. It hosted the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships from 4 to 16 February 2025.
