Best Ski Resorts Around Kitzbühel, Austria

As of September 2026, three ski areas in and around Kitzbühel run lift networks above 200 piste kilometres on a single pass: KitzSki (233 km), SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental (275 km) and the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn (270 km). The field stops at three because every other area in the Kitzbüheler Alpen is far smaller, so this list ranks the three rather than padding it out.

Best Ski Resorts Around Kitzbühel, Austria, ranked

1.

KitzSki

The home area, linking Kitzbühel, Kirchberg and Mittersill across 233 kilometres of piste and 41 kilometres of ski routes between 800 and 2,000 metres. Skiresort.de tested it across 18 criteria in 2025 and made it a five-star test winner. Free valley practice lifts in every village on the pass make it unusually workable for mixed-ability groups. Ski racing has run here since 1895, and the Streif hosts the Hahnenkamm downhill each January.

Which ski areas actually count as Kitzbühel ski resorts?

KitzSki is the ski area attached to the town itself. It links Kitzbühel, Kirchberg and Mittersill, and the terrain sits between the Hahnenkamm and the Kitzbüheler Horn at altitudes from 800 to 2,000 metres. The operator counts 233 kilometres of pistes plus 41 kilometres of marked ski routes. Ski racing has been held here since 1895, and the Hahnenkamm downhill on the Streif still runs every January.

Two larger neighbours sit inside the same wider region, the Kitzbüheler Alpen. SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental spans nine villages, including Westendorf, which borders KitzSki terrain at Brixen im Thale. The Skicircus reaches into Tyrol at Fieberbrunn while its other three bases, Saalbach, Hinterglemm and Leogang, lie in Salzburg. All three areas are drivable from central Kitzbühel inside roughly an hour.

What does skiing around Kitzbühel cost in winter 2026/27?

KitzSki splits the winter into three price tiers. Super Saver runs from the season start until 05.12.2026 and again from 30.03.2027 to the close. Saver covers 06. to 19.12.2026 and 14. to 29.03.2027. Premium, the dearest tier, runs 20.12.2026 to 13.03.2027. On top of the ticket you pay a KeyCard deposit of two euros, or three euros for the personalised wooden Pure Card, which you keep and recharge later.

SkiWelt uses a comparable structure. Its low season dates for 2026/27 are 05. to 18.12.2026 and 13. to 29.03.2027, and pre-sale opened online on 26.09.2026, running until noon on 02.12.2026. Buying inside that window is the single easiest saving.

Family rules differ, so check the birth years. SkiWelt gives child rates to those born 2011 to 2020 and free passes to 2021 and younger, with youth rates for 2008 to 2010. KitzSki listed 2020 and younger as free.

How do you pick the right base for your trip?

  1. Start with your group's ability spread

Mixed groups do well at KitzSki because the valley practice lifts in every village on the pass are free of charge, so a nervous beginner can spend a morning on a nursery slope while the rest of the group heads for the Hahnenkamm. The 41 kilometres of marked ski routes give stronger skiers something beyond the 233 kilometres of groomed piste. SkiWelt, at 275 kilometres across nine villages, spreads easier terrain more evenly, which suits groups who want to ski together all day.

  2. Match the pass to the number of days

Short trips of one or two days rarely justify a regional pass. From three days upward the arithmetic changes. A SkiWelt pass of 2 to 14 days includes one day on KitzSki, and a KitzSki pass of the same length includes one day on SkiWelt, which turns a week into two separate 200-plus kilometre networks. The SuperSkiCard goes further, covering up to 88 areas in Austria and Bavaria, quoted at more than 2,840 piste kilometres and 938 lifts.

  3. Book into the cheaper calendar weeks

The same terrain costs noticeably less outside the Premium window of 20.12.2026 to 13.03.2027 at KitzSki. Early December and the second half of March fall into Saver or Super Saver pricing at both KitzSki and SkiWelt. If you need late-season snow instead, the Skicircus publishes ski operation through 04.04.2027, and SkiWelt keeps Ellmau open until 04.04.2027.

  4. Use the day-before and night-skiing extras

A SkiWelt pass valid two days or longer lets you ride the lifts free from 15:00 on the day before it starts, which is worth planning your arrival around. In the Skicircus, the A9 Unterschwarzach lift runs night skiing on Monday, Wednesday and Friday until 21:30 from the end of December, and the L12 Schantei lift has floodlit skiing on Monday, Thursday and Saturday from 19:00 to 21:30.

When does the season run in the Kitzbüheler Alpen?

The Skicircus publishes the clearest window: ski operation from 27.11.2026 to 04.04.2027, subject to change. SkiWelt frames its winter through pass pricing, with low season from 05. to 18.12.2026 and again from 13. to 29.03.2027, plus an extended run at Ellmau from 30.03. to 04.04.2027 on standard low-season rates. KitzSki does the same, opening its Super Saver tier before 05.12.2026 and closing after 30.03.2027.

Timing matters more here than in high glacier resorts. KitzSki tops out at 2,000 metres, so December and late March conditions depend heavily on snowmaking. The mid-January period around the Hahnenkamm race is the busiest week of the Kitzbühel winter, and it sits inside the Premium price tier.

Which smaller areas are worth considering instead?

Several smaller areas in the Kitzbüheler Alpen appear in the Skiresort.de test reports alongside the big three. Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau is rated a top ski resort in the Kitzbühel Alps, and Schmitten above Zell am See is rated top for families. At Steinplatte near Waidring, a new six-seater Bäreck chairlift from Doppelmayr, with weather protection covers and seat heating, entered service for the 2025/26 winter.

If you are based in Saalbach or Leogang, the Ski ALPIN CARD is the obvious upgrade. It bundles the Skicircus with the Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier above Kaprun for 408 piste kilometres and 121 lifts, which is the largest single-pass figure available in this corner of Austria.

How is this ranking computed?

  • Piste network on one pass: 30%
  • Lift infrastructure: 20%
  • Beginner and family terrain: 15%
  • Season length and snow reliability: 15%
  • Pass value and reciprocity: 10%
  • Access from Kitzbühel: 10%
