Largest Ski Resorts in Austria, Ranked by Piste Km
As of September 2026, Ski Arlberg is Austria's largest lift-linked ski area with 305 km of marked pistes and 88 lifts. SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental follows with 275 km and 81 lifts, then the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn with 270 km and 70 lifts. Silvretta Arena Ischgl/Samnaun, KitzSki and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis complete the top six, all above 200 km.
Largest Ski Resorts in Austria, Ranked by Piste Km, ranked
Ski Arlberg
Austria's biggest lift-linked area at 305 km of marked piste plus 200 km of open ski routes, served by 88 lifts and cable cars. Eight villages sit on one pass, from St. Anton to Warth-Schröcken, linked since the Flexenbahn closed the gap. The 2026/27 season runs 2 December to 18 April, the longest in this ranking. Lift history here goes back to the Galzigbahn in 1937.
Best for: Serious mileage and off-piste

Second on piste kilometres with 275 km and 81 lifts, spread across nine Tyrolean villages including Söll, Ellmau and Westendorf. Around 80 family-run huts give it the densest mountain catering of any area in the ranking, which keeps lunchtime queues down. Terrain skews gentle, so it suits mixed-ability groups, and 14 of its lifts also run in summer. Lower altitude means snowmaking does real work in December.
Visitor note (Google Maps) "A very beautiful ski world where you can still ski very well."
Best for: Mixed-ability groups and hut lunches

270 km of piste and 70 lifts wrapped around the Glemmtal, with four entry points in Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Leogang and Fieberbrunn. Around 60 huts line the circuits. The Ski ALPIN CARD extends the ticket to 408 km and 121 lifts by adding Schmittenhöhe and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, though those need a drive. Lifts are planned to run 27 November 2026 to 4 April 2027.
Best for: Circuit skiing and apres-ski

239 km of piste on only 45 lifts, split across the Austrian and Swiss border between Ischgl and Samnaun. Terrain runs mainly from about 1,800 m to 2,800 m, and the 2026/27 season opens on 26 November. Of 143 runs, 72 are red and 43 black, so it rewards confident intermediates. The Silvretta pass adds Galtür, Kappl and See on 74 lifts.
Best for: High-altitude intermediate cruising

233 km of piste and 57 lifts spanning Kitzbühel, Kirchberg and the Pass Thurn side towards Mittersill. The run mix is unusually friendly for a famous name: 47 blue against 17 black, with the Hahnenkamm Streif as the headline test piece. The resort quotes up to 200 operating days a year, and a Friday discount cuts 15 percent off seasonal rates in Saver and Value periods.
Best for: Ski history with easy cruising
Official website See full factsSerfaus-Fiss-Ladis
214 km of piste, 68 lifts and 89 marked runs shared by three linked villages on a sunny Tyrolean terrace. An underground funicular keeps cars out of Serfaus and moves guests to the lift base, which is why family traffic works here. Guest card holders pay reduced day rates. The published estimate for 2026/27 is 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027.
Best for: Families with small children

Three different numbers get called "size" in Austrian resort marketing, and they are not interchangeable. The first is marked piste kilometres inside one lift-linked area: Ski Arlberg publishes 305 km, SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental 275 km, the Skicircus 270 km. The second is the pass network, which bundles areas that are not connected by lifts. The Ski ALPIN CARD, for example, covers 408 km and 121 lifts by adding Zell am See's Schmittenhöhe and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier to the Skicircus, but you drive between them.
The third is off-piste terrain. Ski Arlberg counts a further 200 km of open, unpatrolled ski routes on top of its 305 km. Our ranking uses only lift-linked marked pistes, because that is the terrain you can actually ski in a single day without a car or a bus transfer.
How do the six biggest areas compare on pistes and lifts?
The spread at the top is narrower than most people expect. Ski Arlberg leads on 305 km with 88 lifts and cable cars linking St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben, Zürs, Lech, Oberlech, Warth and Schröcken. SkiWelt sits at 275 km served by 81 lifts and roughly 80 mountain huts. The Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn reaches 270 km on 70 lifts, so it moves more people per kilometre of piste than SkiWelt does.
Below 250 km the character changes. Silvretta Arena Ischgl/Samnaun has 239 km on just 45 lifts, which points to long runs and high-capacity gondolas rather than a dense village network. KitzSki lists 233 km with 57 lifts and up to 200 ski days a year. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis closes the top six with 214 km, 68 lifts and 89 marked runs across three linked villages.
What do lift passes at the biggest Austrian resorts cost?
Pass structure matters more than headline price, because the big areas sell several different products. In Ischgl, the VIP ski pass covers 46 lifts in Ischgl and Samnaun, while the Silvretta ski pass covers 74 lifts and adds Galtür, Kappl and See, taking the network past 300 km. Checked 15 September 2026 on ischgl.com.
Ski Arlberg publishes tariffs for winter 2026/27 that it calls provisional, calculated in August 2026, with the operator reserving the right to re-price before purchase if energy costs move. Discounts are structural rather than promotional: Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis prices day passes lower for holders of a local guest card, and KitzSki runs a Friday discount of 15 percent off the current seasonal rate during its Saver and Value periods. Always compare the pre-season online rate against the window price.
When do these resorts open and close in winter 2026/27?
Opening dates cluster in the last week of November and the first week of December. Silvretta Arena Ischgl/Samnaun starts on 26 November 2026. The Skicircus plans lift operation from 27 November 2026 to 4 April 2027. Ski Arlberg opens St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben, Lech and Zürs on 2 December 2026, with Warth-Schröcken from 4 December and Klösterle-Sonnenkopf from 11 December.
Closing dates are where the differences bite. Ski Arlberg runs to 18 April 2027, two weeks longer than the Skicircus. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is currently listed with an estimated 4 December 2026 start and an 11 April 2027 finish. For an Easter trip in 2027, that late-April window on the Arlberg is the safer booking, and Ischgl has historically extended into early May.
How do you choose between the biggest Austrian ski areas?
Decide whether you need 300 km or 100 km
Most skiers cover 20 to 40 km of piste in a full day. A 305 km area only pays off if you ski five or more days and actually move across the map. If your group splits between lessons and long lunches, the 214 km of Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis will feel identical to the 305 km of Ski Arlberg in practice, at a lower nightly rate.
Match the terrain mix to the weakest skier
Silvretta Arena Ischgl/Samnaun has 143 marked runs, of which 72 are red and 43 black, so beginners get a small share of the map. KitzSki lists 47 blue runs against 17 black. SkiWelt and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis skew easier still. Rank the map by blue-run count, not by total kilometres, when a first-timer is in the party.
Check the altitude band, not just the piste total
Ischgl and Samnaun operate mainly between roughly 1,800 m and 2,800 m, which supports a season from 26 November into spring. SkiWelt's terrain sits far lower and leans on snowmaking in warm Decembers. For trips before Christmas or after mid-March, altitude is the single strongest predictor of piste quality.
Work out your base village and transfers
Large areas have multiple entry points: the Skicircus alone is accessed from Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Leogang and Fieberbrunn. Staying at the wrong end can add a 30 minute bus ride each way. Pick the village next to the lift you will use most, then confirm that its lifts open on the same date as the rest of the area.
What mistakes do people make when booking the biggest resort?
The most common error is buying the widest pass and never leaving one valley. If you ski four days from Ischgl, the 74-lift Silvretta pass adds little over the 46-lift VIP pass, since Galtür, Kappl and See need a bus. The same logic applies to the 408 km Ski ALPIN CARD when you are based in Hinterglemm.
The second mistake is treating the whole area as open on day one. On the Arlberg, Klösterle-Sonnenkopf starts on 11 December 2026, nine days after St. Anton. Book a pre-Christmas week and part of your 305 km may not be running. The third is ignoring hut capacity: SkiWelt's 80 huts absorb crowds far better than areas with fewer, larger restaurants.
How is this ranking computed?

- Lift count and uplift network: 20%
- Seamless lift linkage between villages: 20%
- Season length and snow reliability: 15%
- Terrain variety across ability levels: 10%
