Best Last Minute Ski Resorts in Austria
For a last-minute ski trip booked in September 2026, altitude decides the outcome. Hintertux Glacier runs lifts on 365 days a year, Obertauern sits entirely above 1,630 m, and Solden, Ischgl, Stubai Glacier and Kitzsteinhorn all hold terrain above 2,800 m. These six resorts are ranked on snow-sure altitude, season length, area size, access time and day pass price, using lift company figures.
Best Last Minute Ski Resorts in Austria, ranked
Hintertux Glacier
Hintertux is the only Austrian ski area that runs lifts on all 365 days of the year, so a Friday booking for Saturday still has terrain under it. The glacier tops out at 3,250 m and 21 lifts serve roughly 60 km of local runs. From early December to mid April it links into the 206 km Ski und Gletscherwelt Zillertal 3000. The Schwarze Pfanne valley run drops 1,750 m over 12 km.
Best for: Guaranteed snow on any date

Obertauern sits in a high basin between 1,630 m and 2,313 m, and all 26 lifts start within walking distance of the village, so no hire car is needed after arrival. The 100 km of pistes split into 61 km blue, 35 km red and 4 km black. OnTheSnow logs 562 cm of average annual snowfall. The 2026/27 season is scheduled for 20 November 2026 to 2 May 2027, with a day pass at EUR 72.00.
Best for: Car-free short breaks

Solden pairs a 1,350 m valley base with two glaciers, Rettenbachferner and Tiefenbachferner, that carry about 34 km of the resort's 144 km of pistes. It is the only Austrian resort with three lift-served peaks above 3,000 m, the highest being Schwarze Schneide at 3,367 m. Thirty-one lifts keep the weekend crowds moving. The glacier sector usually opens in mid September and can run to early May, which widens the booking window at both ends.
Best for: Early and late season weekends
Official website See full factsIschgl
The Silvretta Arena counts 239 km of pistes and 45 lifts, with 90 percent of the terrain between 2,000 m and 2,872 m. That profile is why short-notice beds in late November or late April still come with real snow. The 2026/27 season is published as 26 November 2026 to 2 May 2027, and VIP Specials cover 26 November to 18 December and 3 April to 2 May. One pass also covers Galtur, Kappl and See.
Best for: Biggest linked area at short notice
Official website See full factsStubai Glacier
Stubai Glacier covers 1,450 hectares, making it the largest glacier ski area in Austria, with 26 lifts between 1,695 m and 3,210 m. Innsbruck is 45 to 50 minutes away by road and a free ski bus runs from the city, so a Thursday flight can become a Friday morning on snow. The 2025/26 season ran 10 October 2025 to 17 May 2026, and the next opening is scheduled for 9 October 2026. The Wilde Grube descent is 10 km.
Best for: Fly-in day trips from Innsbruck
Official website See full factsKitzsteinhorn
Kitzsteinhorn is the only glacier ski area in Salzburger Land and typically runs from October into May, covering the shoulder weeks when lower resorts are shut. Skiresort.com lists 62.5 km of slopes, 8.9 km of ski routes and 24 lifts between 768 m and 3,029 m, a vertical spread of 2,261 m. The Ski ALPIN CARD adds Schmittenhohe and Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn for 408 km on one ticket.
Best for: Glacier plus a big valley resort
Official website See full factsWhat makes an Austrian ski resort a safe last-minute booking?
A last-minute booking removes your ability to wait for a forecast, so the resort has to carry the risk instead. Altitude does most of that work. In the Silvretta Arena around Ischgl, 90 percent of the terrain sits between 2,000 m and 2,872 m, and in Obertauern the lowest lift base is 1,630 m. Both figures mean the snow line almost never rises above the village during the core season.
Glaciers remove the risk entirely. Hintertux operates on 365 days a year, and Stubai Glacier reaches 3,210 m across 1,450 hectares. Solden is the only Austrian resort with three lift-served peaks above 3,000 m.
The second factor is layout. Obertauern has 26 lifts and all of them start within the village, so a trip booked without a hire car still works.
When can you still ski in Austria if you book at short notice?
The window is wider than most booking sites suggest. Stubai Glacier opened on 10 October 2025 and closed on 17 May 2026, and the next season is scheduled to start on 9 October 2026. Solden's two glaciers, Rettenbachferner and Tiefenbachferner, usually open in mid September or early October and can run to early May.
For the non-glacier resorts, the dates are tighter but still generous. Obertauern is scheduled for 20 November 2026 to 2 May 2027. Ischgl has published 26 November 2026 to 2 May 2027 for the Silvretta Arena. Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun typically runs October to May.
Hintertux is the outlier. The glacier never closes, though the linked 206 km Ski und Gletscherwelt Zillertal 3000 only forms from early December to mid April, and summer operation drops to roughly 20 km of slopes and up to 10 lifts.
How much does a last-minute lift pass actually cost?
Lift passes are the one cost that does not inflate when you book late, because they are priced by date and not by demand. Obertauern lists an adult day pass at EUR 72.00 for the 2026/27 season, with a two-hour pass at EUR 44.00 and a three-hour pass at EUR 53.00 for those arriving mid-afternoon.
Shoulder-season pricing is where late bookers win. Ischgl runs its VIP Specials from 26 November to 18 December 2026 and again from 3 April to 2 May 2027, which are exactly the weeks with the loosest accommodation.
Budget for the small extras too. Ischgl charges a EUR 5 deposit on any keycard covering two days or more, and Obertauern charges EUR 2.00. Both are refundable when the card is returned undamaged.
How do you organise an Austrian ski trip with three days' notice?
Pick the altitude band first, then the village
Start with the mountain, not the hotel. If your dates fall before 15 December or after 10 April, restrict the shortlist to glaciers and high basins: Hintertux at 3,250 m, Stubai Glacier at 3,210 m, Solden at 3,340 m, Kitzsteinhorn at 3,029 m or Obertauern between 1,630 m and 2,313 m. Mid-season, from January to March, the field opens up and the 239 km of the Silvretta Arena become a reasonable bet.
Check the live lift count, not the brochure total
Published piste totals describe a fully open resort. Kitzsteinhorn advertises 62.5 km of slopes plus 8.9 km of ski routes across 24 lifts, but the Maiskogel section at 768 m behaves differently from the glacier at 3,029 m. Bergfex and each lift company's own status page show open lifts and open slopes as a live fraction, for example 0 of 26 in Obertauern before the 20 November 2026 opening. Look at that number before you pay.
Match the transfer to your arrival time
Stubai Glacier is 45 to 50 minutes from Innsbruck by road and has a free ski bus, so an evening flight still gives you a full first day. Hintertux is about 85 km from Innsbruck, with Jenbach as the rail interchange for Mayrhofen. Solden and Ischgl also use Innsbruck as the nearest airport. Kaprun connects to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier by the K-onnection gondola from the village centre, which removes a bus leg.
Buy the widest pass only if you will use it
The Ski ALPIN CARD covers Kitzsteinhorn, Schmittenhohe and the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn for a combined 408 km and 121 lifts. In Ischgl, the ski pass is valid at 76 facilities including Galtur, Kappl and See. On a two-day or three-day trip you are unlikely to reach the far end of either network, so a local pass at EUR 72.00 in Obertauern often beats the regional card.
Reserve hire gear before the accommodation
Rental stock, not beds, is the usual bottleneck in the final 72 hours, especially in boot sizes at the extremes. Book online through the resort rental network first, then confirm the room. In Obertauern there are 11 lift access points with a sales outlet at each, open daily 09:00 to 16:00, so lift tickets can safely be left until the morning of day one.
What do last-minute bookers in Austria get wrong?
The first mistake is reading a single piste total as a guarantee. Hintertux quotes 206 km, but that is the linked Ski und Gletscherwelt Zillertal 3000 from December to mid April. The glacier itself has 21 lifts and roughly 60 km, of which 9 km are ungroomed ski routes.
The second is ignoring vertical spread. Kitzsteinhorn runs from 768 m to 3,029 m, a drop of 2,261 m, and in a warm November only the top third is worth skiing. Solden's 144 km includes about 34 km on the glaciers, reached over the Otztal Glacier Road.
The third is arriving without a plan for bad visibility. On a glacier above 3,000 m a whiteout closes the best terrain, which is why Solden, with three peaks over 3,000 m plus valley runs from 1,350 m, tends to hold up better than a pure glacier area.
Which alternatives work when the ranked resorts are full?
Ischgl's pass already contains its own overflow plan. The same ticket covers Galtur, Kappl and See further down the Paznaun valley, all reachable from Ischgl by road, and all with cheaper beds at short notice.
In the Zillertal, the Hintertux glacier is linked with Eggalm, Rastkogel, Finkenberg, Penken and Ahorn, so a bed in Mayrhofen or Finkenberg still puts you on the 206 km network. In Salzburg, the Ski ALPIN CARD spreads across Kaprun, Zell am See and Saalbach Hinterglemm.
Obertauern is the one to watch for pass flexibility: the Obertauern pass from 1.5 days is also valid at Speiereck in Mauterndorf, about 15 km away, and the LUNGO pass adds Fanningberg and Katschberg. That is four ski areas on one ticket in a region that rarely sells out completely.
