Austria Ski Resorts Map: 5 Biggest Areas Ranked
As of September 2026, Austria's ski map is dominated by five heavyweights. Ski Arlberg on the Vorarlberg-Tyrol border leads with 300 to 302 km of linked pistes and 85 lifts, ahead of the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn (270 km, 70 lifts) and SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental (275 km, 81 lifts). Ski amade totals 760 km but links its 28 areas by bus, not by lift.
Austria Ski Resorts Map: 5 Biggest Areas Ranked, ranked
Ski Arlberg
Austria's largest connected ski area, quoted at 300 km of groomed pistes by austria.info and 302 km by SnowTrex, served by 85 lifts between 1,450 m and 2,811 m. Six villages sit on one map: St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben, Lech, Zurs and Warth-Schrocken. Over 200 km of unprepared off-piste terrain is reachable on the same pass, which is why advanced skiers rank it first.
Best for: Biggest lift-connected map
Official website See full factsSkicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn
270 km of pistes and 70 lifts form a loop across Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Leogang and Fieberbrunn, the largest ski area in SalzburgerLand. The terrain split is 140 km blue, 112 km red and 18 km black, so most of the map is intermediate ground. The Ski ALPIN CARD widens it to 408 km and 121 lifts by adding Zell am See and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. Winter 2026/27 operation is planned for 27 November to 4 April.
Best for: Best circuit routing

Nine Tyrolean villages, from Soll and Ellmau to Westendorf and Brixen im Thale, share 275 km of pistes and 81 lifts. The map carries 80 family-run huts, one of Tyrol's highest concentrations, plus the signposted SkiWelt Tour past views of more than 70 peaks above 3,000 m. High season runs 19 December 2026 to 12 March 2027, and children born in 2021 or later ski free.
Visitor note (Google Maps) "A very beautiful ski world where you can still ski very well."
Best for: Most villages on one pass

The largest single ticket on the Austrian map: about 356 runs totalling 760 km (275 km blue, 390 km red, 95 km black) and 270 lifts moving 375,000 passengers per hour. The catch is connectivity, since the 28 areas across Salzburg and Styria are linked by bus, not by lift. Snowmaking covers 90 percent of the terrain and the highest lift, on the Dachstein Glacier, reaches 2,700 m.
Visitor note (Google Maps) "I was back in the Skiwelt Amadé after almost 15-20 years."
Best for: Largest total footprint
Official website See full factsSerfaus-Fiss-Ladis
Three linked villages in the Tyrolean Oberland share 214 km of pistes on a map small enough to learn in a day. Pricing is unusually granular: high season covers 19 December 2026 to 12 March 2027 and 20 to 29 March 2027, with low season on 13 to 19 March and 30 March to 4 April 2027. Children born in 2021 or later travel free, and one overnight stay earns the guest card discount.
Best for: Compact family map

Draw a line west to east across the Alps and you have the shape of Austrian skiing. Ski Arlberg straddles the Vorarlberg-Tyrol border, linking St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben, Lech, Zurs and Warth-Schrocken between 1,450 m and 2,811 m. Move east into Tyrol and you hit the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental, nine villages from Soll to Brixen im Thale sharing 275 km of pistes. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis sits south of the Inn valley in the Tyrolean Oberland with 214 km.
Cross into SalzburgerLand for the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, whose 270 km circuit reaches back into Tyrol at Fieberbrunn. Further east, Ski amade spreads across Salzburg and Styria in five regions, with the city of Salzburg about 60 km away. The portal bergfex counts 393 ski resorts in Austria in total, against 425 in Germany and 276 in Switzerland.
Which map should you use to plan an Austrian ski trip?
Start with a country-level resort map
Use a multi-resort map first to fix your region before you look at pistes. The bergfex map covers 393 Austrian ski areas alongside 276 in Switzerland, 425 in Germany, 210 in Italy, 260 in France and 47 in Slovenia, with snow depths, webcams and lift status layered on top. At this stage you are deciding between Vorarlberg, Tyrol, SalzburgerLand and Styria, not between individual lifts.
Switch to the operator's official piste map
Every major area publishes its own panorama map. Ski Arlberg shows 85 lifts and over 200 km of unpatrolled off-piste terrain on skiarlberg.at. SkiWelt publishes the signposted SkiWelt Tour, a full-day circuit past views of more than 70 peaks above 3,000 m. Saalbach's map marks the 270 km circus split into 140 km blue, 112 km red and 18 km black.
Check whether the map is one lift network or several
This is the step most people skip. Ski amade prints 760 km of pistes on a single brochure map, but the 28 areas across Salzburger Sportwelt, Dachstein Tauern, Gastein, Hochkonig and Grossarl are joined by buses. Ski Arlberg's 300 km, by contrast, is one connected lift system serving six villages. Read the legend for bus routes before assuming you can ski from one dot to another.
Cross-check the pass footprint
The pass can be wider than the map you are holding. The Ski ALPIN CARD extends the Skicircus from 270 km and 70 lifts to 408 km and 121 lifts by adding Schmittenhohe in Zell am See and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. SkiWelt's own pass covers 275 km, while the SuperSkiCard it belongs to spans a far larger network. Verify which document your ticket opens gates on.
How much of the piste kilometrage is actually connected?
Headline numbers on Austria's ski map mix two different things: lift-linked terrain and marketing alliances. Ski Arlberg is the largest genuinely connected area in the country, quoted at 300 km by Austria's national tourist board and 302 km by SnowTrex, with 85 lifts and more than 200 km of off-piste variants on the same ticket.
Ski amade is bigger on paper. Wikipedia's figures give around 356 runs totalling 760 km (275 km blue, 390 km red, 95 km black) served by 270 lifts with a capacity of 375,000 passengers per hour. Those 28 areas are linked by bus, and the highest lift, on the Dachstein Glacier, tops out at 2,700 m.
In between sit the SkiWelt at 275 km with 81 lifts and 80 family-run huts, the Skicircus at 270 km with 70 lifts, and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis at 214 km. SnowTrex ranks Austria's five biggest as Arlberg, Skicircus, SkiWelt, Silvretta Arena Ischgl-Samnaun and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis.
When does each area open, and when do prices drop?
Season windows are published well ahead and they drive pricing. The Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn plans lift operation from 27 November 2026 to 4 April 2027. SkiWelt sets its high season from 19 December 2026 to 12 March 2027, with SkiWelt Ellmau running an extended season from 30 March to 4 April 2027 at standard low-season rates.
Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis splits the calendar more finely: high season covers 19 December 2026 to 12 March 2027 plus 20 to 29 March 2027, while low season covers 13 to 19 March 2027 and 30 March to 4 April 2027. Prices there include 10 percent VAT and drop again if you hold the guest card, which comes with a single overnight stay.
Child rules matter for family budgets. Children born in 2021 or later ski free in both SkiWelt and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, and SkiWelt adds 2 EUR to every tariff for a reusable key card.
What do people get wrong when reading Austria's ski map?
Three mistakes come up repeatedly. First, treating a region name as a village: Ski Arlberg is six settlements (St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben, Lech, Zurs, Warth-Schrocken), and the SkiWelt is nine, including Ellmau, Going, Scheffau, Soll, Hopfgarten, Itter, Kelchsau, Westendorf and Brixen im Thale. Booking "the Arlberg" tells you nothing about which lift you walk to.
Second, assuming federal states match ski areas. Fieberbrunn belongs to the Skicircus but lies in Tyrol, while Saalbach, Hinterglemm and Leogang are in SalzburgerLand. Ski amade covers both Salzburg and Styria.
Third, reading total kilometres as ski-through terrain. Ski amade's 760 km involves bus transfers between 28 areas in five regions, which is a different holiday from Arlberg's single 300 km network.
Which area on the map fits which kind of skier?
Terrain splits tell you more than the totals. The Skicircus publishes 140 km blue, 112 km red and only 18 km black, which explains why intermediates dominate its 270 km. Ski amade's spread is 275 km blue, 390 km red and 95 km black across 760 km, so the difficulty balance shifts towards red runs.
Ski Arlberg is the outlier for advanced skiers: over 200 km of unprepared off-piste terrain sits alongside the 300 km of groomed pistes, and the area reaches 2,811 m. Families tend to gravitate to Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, where 214 km is concentrated above three villages and children born in 2021 or later travel free.
If hut days matter more than vertical, the SkiWelt counts 80 family-run mountain huts across its 275 km, one of Tyrol's densest concentrations.
