Best Ski Resorts in Austria for Parking
As of September 2026, the Skicircus around Saalbach Hinterglemm is the easiest big Austrian ski area to drive to: free parking at the lift stations and free garage use for ski pass holders. Elsewhere the day rate runs EUR 5 in Ischgl, EUR 7 in St. Anton am Arlberg and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, and EUR 10 at Hochkar. Seven resorts are ranked here on cost, free capacity, walking distance and overnight rules.
Best Ski Resorts in Austria for Parking, ranked
Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn
The only entry here with no day charge at all: free spaces at the lift stations in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Leogang and Fieberbrunn, plus free use of the Kohlmaisbahn and Schattberg X-press garages for anyone holding a valid ski pass. The 12er KOGEL and Westgipfel gondola valley stations also list free parking. The catch is the approach, 40 to 70 km from the nearest motorway, and a Zwölferkogel lot limited to 08:00 to 18:00.
Best for: Free parking at the lifts
Official website See full factsSerfaus-Fiss-Ladis
A paid region that still gives things away: 120 minutes free in the main car parks, 90 minutes free at Fiss P1, free parking from 17:00 to 04:00, and free disabled bays at the Serfaus village entrance with lift access to the underground station. The day ticket is EUR 7.00 for 07:00 to 17:00 (checked 15 September 2026). Serfaus is traffic-calmed, so the garage at the village entrance is the end of the drive.
Visitor note (Google Maps) "But Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis ranks among the cream of the crop in terms of infrastructure."
Best for: Short visits and accessible parking
Official website See full factsSki Arlberg
Two parking worlds on one mountain. Arlberger Bergbahnen charges EUR 7.00 per car per day at Galzig, Nasserein and Rendl, with buses at EUR 20.00 (Nasserein) or EUR 100.00 (old Rendlbahn). Free alternatives sit higher up: the St. Christoph Galerie car park above the Findelkind Tunnel, the Arlberg Pass summit, Alpe Rauz and Stuben. St. Anton is also a Railjet and EuroCity stop, which removes the charge entirely. Prices checked 15 September 2026.
Best for: Drivers willing to park up on the pass
Official website See full factsIschgl
Ischgl publishes the lowest day rate in this ranking: EUR 5.00 at the Silvretta parking lot west (P1) between 07:00 and 20:00, buses EUR 50.00. The Silvretta garage costs EUR 1.00 per started half hour and caps at EUR 7.00 for 12 hours, allows night-time parking and has bays with an electric charging station. Entrance height is 2.20 m, so roof boxes go outside. Prices checked 15 September 2026.
Best for: Cheapest published day rate
Official website See full factsObertauern
Obertauern keeps its lift car parks for cable car users, bans parking between 22:00 and 07:00 and rules out motorhome overnight stays. That discipline means spaces turn over on the pass, and P2 (Zehnerkar) and P7 (Schaidberg) take coaches. The resort also tolerates first-time arrivals without a ski pass on the ski bus free of charge during operating hours, which suits guests based down in the Lungau valley.
Best for: Skiers parking only for the day
Official website See full factsSölden
Sölden is the clearest example of parking used as traffic policy. The Ötztal introduced valley-wide parking management to cut non-essential car trips, and marked spaces at Giggijoch sit inside the paid zone, released only after a visit to the ski pass cash desk with permit and licence plate. Buses park free at Gaislachkoglbahn and Giggijoch. The free Guest Card covered half-hourly buses from 7 October 2024 to 5 June 2025.
Best for: Guests using the valley ski bus
Official website See full factsHochkar
The eastern option, and the most expensive per day: EUR 10.00 for a day in the Hochkar Bergbahnen car parks, or EUR 3.00 for two hours (checked 15 September 2026). Terms are unusually explicit, with the Austrian StVO applying inside the lot, walking pace as the limit and no operator obligation to monitor vehicles or contents. With 19 km of slopes, it is a single ski day rather than a week.
Best for: Day trips from eastern Austria
Official website See full factsWhich Austrian ski resorts still have free parking?
Free parking survives mainly in Salzburg's Pinzgau and on the high Arlberg passes. In the Skicircus, day visitors find free spaces at the lift stations in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Leogang and Fieberbrunn, and holders of a valid ski pass park free in the Kohlmaisbahn and Schattberg X-press garages. The valley stations of the 12er KOGEL gondola (top station 1,984 m) and the Westgipfel gondola (top station 2,096 m) also list free parking.
On the Arlberg, the free options sit outside the main village. The Galerie car park above the Findelkind Tunnel in St. Christoph, the spaces at the top of the Arlberg Pass, the Alpe Rauz lots at the Valfagehrbahn and Rauzlift, and the parking in Stuben are all free of charge. Day guests who drive into St. Anton itself pay instead, which is why the pass-height car parks fill first on busy Saturdays.
How much does day parking cost at Austrian ski resorts?
Day rates cluster between EUR 5 and EUR 10 for a car. Ischgl is the cheapest of the big names: the Silvretta parking lot west (P1) charges EUR 5 per day between 07:00 and 20:00, with buses at EUR 50 per day. St. Anton am Arlberg charges EUR 7 per day per car at the Galzig, Nasserein and Rendl car parks, with bus rates of EUR 20 at Nasserein and EUR 100 at the old Rendlbahn. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis charges EUR 7 for a day ticket valid 07:00 to 17:00.
Covered parking is priced by the hour. The Silvretta parking garage in Ischgl bills EUR 1 per started half hour, and from 3.5 hours it switches to a 12-hour rate of EUR 7. Hochkar in Lower Austria is the outlier on the day rate at EUR 10, or EUR 3 for two hours. All prices checked 15 September 2026.
Can you park overnight or sleep in a campervan at the lifts?
Usually not. Obertauern closes its lift car parks to parking between 22:00 and 07:00, states that the restriction also applies to motorhomes, and reserves the car parks exclusively for cable car users. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis runs the mirror image of that rule: parking is free from 17:00 to 04:00, then prohibited from 04:00 to 07:00, so the lots are cleared before the morning shift arrives.
Ischgl is the exception for late arrivals. The Silvretta parking garage explicitly allows night-time parking, with the same 12-hour rate of EUR 7 applied to the 19:00 to 07:00 window, and it has bays with an electric charging station. Sleeping in the vehicle is a separate matter and is not covered by those tariffs. Rates checked 15 September 2026.
How do you park when the ski village is car-free, like Serfaus?
Stop at the village entrance, not the lift
Serfaus is a traffic-calmed municipality, so the drive ends at the village entrance. The parking garage and the open day car park below it sit side by side at that point. Both are subject to charges, and the same tariff sheet covers the Schönjochbahn and Ferschnes car parks in Fiss and the Sonnenbahn car park in Ladis.
Use the free window if you are only visiting
The Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis car parks include 120 minutes of free parking time. In Fiss, the short-term zone at car park P1 by the cable car valley station allows 90 minutes free of charge with a parking disc on the dashboard. Anything longer needs the day ticket of EUR 7, valid 07:00 to 17:00 (checked 15 September 2026).
Ride the underground village train to the lifts
From the entrance garage, the underground village train carries skiers to the cable car station, which is why a car-free village still works for day trippers. Guests using the free disabled parking spaces at the Serfaus village entrance reach the underground station by lift. Those bays cost nothing to use, and advance booking is not possible.
Plan the exit before 04:00
Overnight rules differ from daytime rules. Parking is free in the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis car parks from 17:00 to 04:00, then not permitted from 04:00 to 07:00. Anyone driving home after an evening in the village should therefore be out of the lot before 04:00, or moved to accommodation parking.
What does Ötztal parking management mean for a day trip to Sölden?
Sölden sits inside a valley-wide scheme. The Ötztal introduced car parking management to reduce non-essential private traffic and to push visitors onto public transport, and the valley lines plus ski buses run every half hour. The free Guest Card covers those buses in winter (the published winter validity ran 07 October 2024 to 05 June 2025) and gives a 30 per cent discount in summer.
At the lifts, the detail matters. Marked spaces at the Giggijoch cable car station lie inside the paid parking area next to the valley station, and unlocking the vehicle means going to the staff at the ski pass cash desk with the parking permit and the licence plate number. The marked spaces at the Gaislachkoglbahn are outside the paid north car park. Buses park free of charge at both valley stations.
What parking mistakes cost skiers money in Austria?
Three recurring ones. First, roof boxes and vans meet low ceilings: the Silvretta parking garage in Ischgl has an entrance height of 2.20 m, so a loaded estate car often has to use the open P1 lot at EUR 5 per day instead. Second, payment machines punish hesitation. In the same garage, cancelling the payment process three times blocks the parking ticket automatically.
Third, timing. Ticket offices at the Galzigbahn, Rendlbahn, Nassereinbahn and St. Christoph in St. Anton open daily 08:00 to 16:30, and passes for the next day are only issued at Galzig and Nasserein between 14:00 and 16:00. Car park operators also disclaim liability: Hochkar's terms state that the operator assumes no obligation to monitor the vehicle or its contents, and that walking pace is the maximum speed in the lot under the Austrian StVO.
How is this ranking computed?
- Day parking cost: 30%
- Free parking availability: 25%
- Walk from car park to lift: 20%
- Covered garage and EV charging: 15%
- Clarity of overnight rules: 10%
