Best Piste Map Apps for Skiing in Austria
As of September 2026, bergfex: Skiing & Tracking is the strongest all-round piste map app for Austria, pairing high-resolution piste maps with lift status and snow reports. The free Ski amade app wins inside its own region thanks to A-to-B routing and photo-realistic 2D, 3D and topographic map modes. Slopes leads on interactive maps for more than 2,000 resorts worldwide, but its 3D mode sits behind a USD 29.99 annual Premium plan.

bergfex: Skiing & Tracking
The Austrian default. The winter map shows all slopes and lifts, backed by high-resolution piste maps, snow reports, ticket prices and live lift status in the same view. Descents record automatically with speed, distance and elevation gain, and land in a ski diary. Pro adds an avalanche map, a slope-steepness layer at 30 to 45 degrees, six-hourly snow forecast maps and seven-day snow analysis. Panorama webcams cover the Alps and wider Europe.
Best for: Best all-round for Austria

Free operator app for the Ski amade pass region, and the strongest in-area navigator on this list. Map modes run from photo-realistic 2D to 3D, virtual reality and topographic, and routing takes you A to B inside the ski area rather than just showing the terrain. A Friend Tracker locates your group, the piste tracker and GPS recording build a shareable diary, and Skiline integration logs vertical metres, piste kilometres and every lift used.
Best for: Best inside Ski amade

Published by intermaps.Software GmbH, iSKI Austria bundles a digital ski map with weather reports, snow forecasts and live cams for Austrian ski areas nationwide. A built-in GPS tracker records slope activity, and workouts from a GPS watch can be imported into the iSKI Trophy gamification layer. Later releases added valley and mountain temperatures plus parking and traffic status for some areas. An Apple Watch companion app is included, and the download is free.
Best for: Best free nationwide overview

The best interactive map experience, but the good part is paid. Slopes covers more than 2,000 resorts worldwide with Interactive Trail Maps, a 3D mode added in November 2023, and on-map search for lifts, food, bathrooms and ski patrol. Live location, friend finding, key stats and day summaries stay free; maps and per-run stats need Premium at USD 29.99 a year, USD 49.99 for a family, or USD 3.99 for a single day (checked 15 September 2026).
Best for: Best 3D maps and stats

The research and offline tool. Save a resort, a region or all of Austria and the piste map opens on the mountain without a connection. Resorts can be filtered across 2,200 countries and regions and sorted by size, altitude, rating, open slopes, snow depth or weather, drawing on a database of about 5,000 ski areas and more than 6,300 entry points. A nearby-resorts view uses your location. The app is free.
Best for: Best for offline maps and resort research

Not a navigation map, and we rank it honestly for that. Skiline reads your ski pass over NFC, so it logs vertical metres, downhill distance and lift rides with no GPS and minimal battery cost, which is why it survives a cold day better than tracker apps. It also pulls photo point images and speed-trap videos shot by resort cameras. Supported across Ski amade and resorts including Obertauern, and usable in a browser as well as the app.
Best for: Best battery-free day log
Official website See full factsDo you still need a piste map app if the resort hands out a paper map?
Paper panorama maps are still printed at Austrian lift ticket offices, and they survive a flat battery. What they cannot do is tell you which of the lifts are turning at 14:30 on a windy Thursday. That is the gap the apps fill. The bergfex ski app combines a winter map showing every slope and lift with snow reports, ticket prices and live lift status in one screen.
The second gap is navigation inside large linked areas. The Ski amade app offers A-to-B routing across the ski area plus a Friend Tracker so a split group can regroup without phone calls. In a linked area with dozens of lifts, a routed line from a hut back to the valley station beats a static image saved to your camera roll.
Which piste map apps actually work offline in the Alps?
Mobile coverage in Austrian ski areas is good on ridges and patchy in tree-lined valleys, so offline behaviour matters. The skiresort.info app is explicit about it: you can store favourite resorts and view the piste map out on the mountain without a connection, and you can save a whole country so that every open slope in Austria stays available.
Cold is the second enemy. Skiline sidesteps GPS entirely by reading your ski pass over NFC, which keeps battery drain low and still returns vertical metres, downhill distance and lift rides at the end of the day. If you rely on a GPS tracker instead, keep the phone in an inside pocket, start the recording before the first lift, and accept that continuous tracking plus 3D map rendering will cost you a noticeable slice of charge by lunchtime.
What do these apps cost for the 2026/27 season?
Most of the field is free at the point of use. The Ski amade app is distributed free on iOS and Android, and the skiresort.info app is published as a free ski app covering resorts worldwide. iSKI Austria is likewise free to download from the App Store, where it is published by intermaps.Software GmbH.
The paid tiers buy depth rather than basic maps. Slopes keeps live location tracking, friend finding, key stats and day summaries free, while Interactive Trail Maps and 3D mode require Premium at USD 29.99 per year, with a family plan at USD 49.99 per year and a single day pass at USD 3.99 (checked 15 September 2026). bergfex Pro adds avalanche maps, a slope-steepness layer, six-hourly snow forecast maps and ad-free use; check the current subscription price in the app store listing before you commit.
FATMAP is gone, so what should off-piste skiers use now?
FATMAP was the reference 3D mountain map for freeriders in the Alps. Strava, which had bought it, retired the FATMAP app and website on 1 October 2024 and deleted account data, keeping only selected features inside Strava. Reviewers noted afterwards that the full 3D winter map mode and the user-generated route guidebooks did not survive the move intact.
For Austrian off-piste that leaves two practical routes. Use bergfex Pro for its avalanche map and slope-steepness overlay at the 30, 35, 40 and 45 degree thresholds, which is the layer most skiers want when reading a face from the lift. Or treat the piste map app as resort navigation only and carry a dedicated touring map plus the official avalanche bulletin for anything beyond the marked runs.
How do you set up a piste map app before your first lift?
Download and cache the resort the night before
Install the app on hotel Wi-Fi, not on the gondola queue. In the skiresort.info app, save the resort or the whole country as a favourite so the piste map opens offline on the mountain. Do the same in your resort app: the Ski amade app carries photo-realistic 2D, 3D, virtual reality and topographic map views, and loading all of them the first time takes bandwidth you will not have at 2,000 metres.
Turn on the data you will actually read
Enable lift and slope status, weather and webcams. bergfex shows open lifts and slopes, snow reports and ticket prices next to the winter map, and iSKI Austria adds valley and mountain temperatures plus parking and traffic information for some areas. Switch off notification categories you do not need so the useful alerts are not buried.
Link the tracking layer to your ski pass
If your resort supports Skiline, scan the ski pass with NFC once and the day records itself without GPS. Ski amade feeds vertical metres and piste kilometres into a personal Skiline that also lists every lift you used. Photo points and speed-trap cameras attach images to the same record.
Set a battery plan
Charge to 100 percent overnight, carry a power bank, and keep the phone against a base layer rather than in an outer jacket pocket. GPS tracking apps such as Slopes record live location all day, which is the single largest drain, so close the map view on long lift rides.
What do skiers get wrong when choosing a piste map app?
The first mistake is confusing a tracker with a map. Skiline and Ski Tracks are built to log runs, vertical and speed; neither is designed to route you off a red run in poor visibility. If navigation is the job, start with bergfex, the resort operator app, or Slopes Premium.
The second is installing only one app. Resort operator apps are usually the most accurate on which lifts are spinning, because the data comes from the lift company, while national apps such as iSKI Austria and aggregators such as skiresort.info are better for comparing snow depth across several regions before you drive. Two apps, one offline map cached, covers both jobs.
The third is ignoring language and units. Several Austrian apps default to German and to metres; check the settings on the first evening rather than at the top of a 3,000 metre glacier lift.
How is this ranking computed?
- Austrian piste map coverage: 30%
- Offline reliability: 20%
- Live lift and slope status: 20%
- Navigation and routing: 15%
- Tracking and stats: 10%
- Cost: 5%
