St. Anton vs Ischgl: Which Is Better?
As of September 2026, neither resort wins outright. St. Anton sits in Ski Arlberg, Austria's largest linked area, with 300 km of pistes, around 88 lifts and 200 km of off-piste. Ischgl offers 239 km on 45 lifts, but higher: 1,360 m to 2,872 m, with a season running 26 November 2026 to 2 May 2027. Choose St. Anton for freeride terrain, Ischgl for altitude and length of season.

Which resort has the better terrain for your level?
Ischgl's grading tells the story. Of 143 runs in the Silvretta Arena, 28 are blue, 72 red and 43 black, and only about 47 km of the 239 km total is graded blue. Most of the skiing sits between 2,000 m and 2,872 m on wide, open mountainsides, which suits intermediates who want to cover ground on fast lifts. Beginners are not shut out, but the blue terrain is a small slice of a big area.
St. Anton skews harder in a different way. Ski Arlberg lists 300 km of marked piste plus 200 km of open freeride terrain, and the vertical from 2,811 m down to 1,269 m is over 1,500 m. The Karl-Schranz-Piste, built for the 2001 World Championships, drops 681 m in 2.068 km at up to 38 degrees. That is the character of the place: long, steep, and demanding on the legs.
What does a lift pass cost in each resort?
Day tickets are close. Adult day passes in St. Anton were quoted at EUR 62 to EUR 72 for 2025/26 depending on date and advance booking, against EUR 59 to EUR 69 in Ischgl. The gap is a few euros, not a deciding factor. Both resorts price by season window: Ski Arlberg splits 2025/26 into pre and late season (3 to 19 December 2025, then 7 to 19 April 2026) and high season from 20 December 2025 to 6 April 2026.
Ischgl runs the same logic under different names. VIP Specials apply from 26 November to 18 December 2026 and again from 3 April to 2 May 2027, and the VIP tariff needs an Ischgl or Mathon guest card. Under it, children under 10 ski free with a parent. The wider Silvretta Skipass covers 76 facilities across Ischgl/Samnaun plus Galtuer, Kappl and See, while the VIP pass covers 46 in Ischgl/Samnaun alone.
Which resort is more snow-sure, and whose season is longer?
Ischgl wins on both counts, and the numbers are not close. Winter 2026/27 in the Silvretta Arena runs from 26 November 2026 to 2 May 2027, more than five months. Skiing concentrates between 1,800 m and 2,800 m, and roughly 1,150 snow guns back it up. Season and annual passes go on sale at the Silvrettabahn A1 counters from 16 November 2026.
St. Anton counters with natural snow rather than altitude. The tourism board puts average natural snowfall at around nine metres per winter at 1,304 m. The 2025/26 season ran 3 December 2025 to 19 April 2026, 139 days, and for 2026/27 the lifts are scheduled to start on 2 December 2026. Spring skiing above 2,000 m holds up, but the valley runs back to the village get thin in April.
What do people get wrong when choosing between them?
The first mistake is comparing village against village. St. Anton's ticket is a Ski Arlberg ticket, covering 300 km and 88 lifts across St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben, Lech, Zuers and Warth-Schroecken, linked since the Flexenbahn opened. Comparing 239 km in Ischgl against St. Anton's local sector alone understates the Arlberg by a wide margin.
The second is assuming both areas are equally high. Ischgl's village sits at 1,377 m, but nobody skis there for long: the lifts start the day and the terrain lives above 2,000 m, topping out at the Palinkopf at 2,872 m. St. Anton's base is 1,269 m and its valley runs matter. In a lean February that difference shows.
The third is treating off-piste as a bonus. In St. Anton it is the product, and it carries avalanche risk that demands a guide and proper equipment.
Are there better alternatives to either resort?
If the answer to St. Anton versus Ischgl is neither, the Paznaun valley and the Arlberg both offer cheaper neighbours. The Silvretta Skipass already covers Galtuer, Kappl and See alongside Ischgl and Samnaun, 76 facilities in total, so a stay further down the valley keeps the big area in reach at lower bed rates.
On the Arlberg side, the same 300 km pass is sold from Stuben, Klosterle/Sonnenkopf, Pettneu and Warth-Schroecken. Lech and Zuers sit on the quieter end of the network and have been lift-linked to the St. Anton sector since winter 2013/14. Families who want gentler terrain than either resort offers should look at the beginner-focused areas in Tyrol and Salzburg instead, where blue piste share is far higher than Ischgl's 47 km out of 239 km.
Which options rank highest?
St. Anton am Arlberg
St. Anton's lift pass covers Ski Arlberg: 300 km of marked pistes, 200 km of open freeride terrain and about 88 lifts, linked to Lech, Zuers, Stuben and Warth-Schroecken. The area tops out at 2,811 m and drops to 1,269 m, so vertical is large and long descents are the norm. The village sits at 1,304 m, low enough that late-April cover at valley level depends on the season. Winter 2025/26 ran 3 December to 19 April, 139 days.
