Best Ski Resorts in Austria for Toddlers
As of September 2026, the strongest Austrian bases for children aged one to three are SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental, which takes toddlers into ski-area childcare from 6 months, and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, which reserves 125,000 square metres for children. Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschoenau, Nassfeld and Obertauern follow. The field is narrow because few Austrian ski areas publish a minimum childcare age below three years.
Best Ski Resorts in Austria for Toddlers, ranked
SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental
The only Austrian ski area we found stating childcare from 6 months inside the ski area itself. Ellmi's Kids Club sits at the Hartkaiserbahn top station above Ellmau at 1,520 m and takes ages 2 to 6. Four valley practice areas (Itter, Soell, Westendorf, Hopfgarten) are free, nine villages share one pass covering 275 km and 81 lifts, and children born in 2021 or later ride free in 2026/27.
Visitor note (Google Maps) "A very beautiful ski world where you can still ski very well."
Best for: Youngest published childcare age

Three villages reserve 125,000 square metres for children, including the 45,000 square metre Kinderschneealm on the plateau above Serfaus, the Murmlipark in the village centre for ages three and up, and Berta's Kinderland in Fiss-Ladis. Tirol's tourist board lists the Murmli creche for ages 1 to 6 and Berta's kindergarten from 3 months. The ski area covers 214 km of piste and pre-schoolers born in 2021 or later travel free.
Best for: Most dedicated children's terrain
Official website See full factsSki Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau
A 114 km area with 45 lifts linking Alpbachtal and the Wildschoenau, so the scale stays manageable with a pushchair. The JUPPI-DO Kinderland at the Reitherkogelbahn valley station in Reith handles ages four to ten, and the Juppi Zauberwald route and Kids Run on piste 46b give older siblings something to chase. Village lifts in Kramsach and Brandenberg are free on weekdays for children up to 15.
Visitor note (Google Maps) "These are the operators of the lift and disembarkation assistance in the Alpbachtal."
Best for: Quiet villages and mixed-age families
Official website See full factsNassfeld
Carinthia's largest ski area spreads 110 km of slopes across the Austrian and Italian sides of the Nassfeld pass, with snowmaking on 100 percent of pistes and 7 to 8 m of average snowfall a winter. The Kids Surprise ticket costs EUR 10 for under-10s every Saturday, and children born in 2021 and after count as bambini. Nursery terrain sits at Tressdorfer Alm above the Millennium Express gondola.
Best for: Lowest family lift-pass cost
Official website See full factsObertauern
A compact Salzburg resort on the Tauern pass, with the village at 1,740 m and lifts ringing it, which cuts the carry from door to gondola. The children's offer is themed terrain rather than an in-area creche for under-threes: Bobby Land includes Bobby's Monster Park, Bobby's Ghost Train and Bobby's Slalom, with the Bibo Bear Family Ski Park and ski-school children's areas alongside 100 km of piste on 26 lifts.
Best for: Ski-in village at 1,740 m

Three things decide it, and none of them is piste kilometres. First, the published minimum age for childcare. SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental states care inside the ski area from 6 months, while Ellmi's Kids Club above Ellmau takes children from 2 to 6 years at the Hartkaiserbahn top station (1,520 m). In Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, Tirol's tourist board lists the Murmli creche for ages 1 to 6 and Berta's kindergarten from 3 months.
Second, distance. A one-year-old in a snowsuit does not walk far, so a base where the gondola is a few minutes from the accommodation beats a bigger area with a bus transfer. Third, terrain you never use: 275 km of slopes is irrelevant for a toddler, but a free valley practice area matters, and SkiWelt has four of them (Itter, Soell, Westendorf, Hopfgarten).
How young can a child go into childcare at an Austrian ski resort?
The published floor is low in two places and much higher elsewhere. SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental advertises toddler care from 6 months directly in the ski area, which is the youngest age we found stated by an Austrian lift company. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis sits close behind: Berta's kindergarten in Fiss-Ladis is listed from 3 months and the Murmli creche covers ages 1 to 6.
Below that tier, three years is the normal entry point. The Murmlipark in the centre of Serfaus is designed for children from around three, and in Berwang childcare starts at age three. Skiing itself usually starts later than childcare. Most Austrian ski schools group children from three or four years, so a two-year-old is a childcare guest, not a ski-school pupil, and you should book on that basis.
What does a toddler week actually cost on top of your own pass?
Lift passes are the easy part, because pre-schoolers usually ride free. For the 2026/27 season, SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental lists children born in 2021 or later as free, with the child tariff running for birth years 2011 to 2020. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis applies the same cut-off: children born in 2021 or later travel free with photo ID. Nassfeld classes children born in 2021 and after as bambini.
Nassfeld also runs a Kids Surprise day ticket at EUR 10 for children under 10, valid every Saturday of the season (checked 15 September 2026). The real cost is childcare and it is charged by the ski school, creche or hotel, not the lift company, so get the day rate and the booking deadline in writing before you commit to a village.
How do you choose between a big linked area and a small one?
Start with the childcare age, not the map
Filter to the areas whose childcare accepts your child's age in months. That single test removes most Austrian resorts for a one-year-old and leaves SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental (from 6 months) and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis (Berta's kindergarten from 3 months, Murmli creche from 1 year) at the front.
Check how far the creche is from the lift
Position matters as much as opening age. Ellmi's Kids Club sits at 1,520 m at the Hartkaiserbahn top station in Ellmau, so you ride up with the child and ski from the same point. The Kinderschneealm in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis covers 45,000 square metres on the plateau above Serfaus and is run by the Serfaus ski school.
Price the family, not the adult
Compare the pre-school free age (birth year 2021 or later in SkiWelt, Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis and Nassfeld as at 15 September 2026), then add childcare. In Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschoenau, village lifts in Kramsach and Brandenberg are free on weekdays for all children up to 15, which changes the maths for mixed-age families.
Book the low-season weeks
Quiet slopes and shorter lift queues help with small children. SkiWelt's 2026/27 low-season windows are 5 to 18 December 2026 and 13 to 29 March 2027, with Ellmau running an extended season to 4 April 2027. Those dates avoid the February half-term crush in Tyrol.
What do parents get wrong when they book with a toddler?
Four mistakes repeat. Booking a 275 km ski area and then never leaving the nursery slope: the size is for the adults, so judge the base village instead. Assuming childcare and ski school are the same product: in SkiWelt the two are separate, with care from 6 months and lessons starting later. Skipping the equipment rule: helmets are compulsory for children in most Austrian states, and Tyrol enforces it, so budget for a fitted child helmet rather than a hand-me-down.
The fourth is timing. Peak weeks sell out childcare places before accommodation, so a February half-term booking made in January often leaves you without a creche slot. Reserve the creche on the day you reserve the bed.
Which other Austrian resorts are worth a look for very young children?
Beyond the five ranked here, several smaller areas are built around children. Ramsau am Dachstein in Styria is geared to families and runs the Kaliland winter play area. In Berwang, in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, childcare is available from age three. Hochficht in Upper Austria has the Fichtl Kids Park, and the Dorfgastein and Grossarltal circuit in Salzburg runs children's areas and ski kindergartens.
These are the right call when your priority is a quiet, short-transfer village rather than a large linked area. The trade-off is fewer slopes for the adults: Hochficht and Ramsau are a fraction of the 275 km in SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental or the 214 km in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, and non-ski options thin out in bad weather.
How is this ranking computed?
- Minimum childcare age: 30%
- Dedicated children's terrain: 22%
- Village-to-lift convenience: 18%
- Cost for families: 15%
- Bad-weather and non-ski options: 15%
